Nouns

Singular and Plural Nouns
 When a noun ends with :
S , SH , CH , Z , X or O ; the plural form
comes by adding “ es “ at the end of the
noun.
 Examples:

 glottis ----- glottises


 thorax ----- thoraxes

 When a noun ends with :
 “ Y “ preceded by a consonant ; the plural
form comes by replacing the “ y “ with an “ i
“ , then adding “ es “ at the end of the noun .
 Examples:

 cavity ---- cavities

 In the other cases :
 Plural form comes by adding “ s “ at the
end of the noun .
Examples:

 lung ----- lungs


Irregular Plurals
 There are some nouns which don’t follow
any of the pervious plural rules . They
have different plural forms.
Examples:

 tooth ----- teeth


Group Nouns
 Group words of people can have singular
or plural verbs . They can be treated as
singular or plural nouns.
Examples:

 Your family are amazing.


 This team is my favorite.

 Some nouns are always plural .

Examples:

 Scissors

 Tongs
Nouns C. and Unc.
 Some nouns can be countable and
uncountable , with different meaning.
Examples:

 The doctor did this surgery many times.


 Funny time goes fast.
One and Ones

 Use one or ones instead of repeating a

countable noun.

 ONE ----- Singular

 ONES ----- Plural

Possessive Nouns

 We can use more than one possessive

nouns.

Examples:

 Amal’s father’s clinic.

 Possessive nouns with ‘s or s’ take the
place of “ That “
Examples:

 The clinic that belongs to Amal.


 Amal’s clinic.
Noun + Noun
 It can be a noun { usually singular } before
another noun to talk about :
 Kind
 Thing
 Person
Examples:
 Ambulances drivers. (X)
 Ambulance driver. (√)
 Fitness club.
Noun + Noun Structure
 Some noun + noun structure are so
common that we write them as one
word.
Examples:

 Hair - Brush : Hairbrush .


 Tooth - Baste: Toothpaste .
