“Looking a bit lonely over here, Weasley. Where’s your hero boyfriend?” A voice came over
Ginny’s shoulder and she turned to stand face to face with Blaise Zabini. Ugh, Blaise Zabini.
Taller than her petite frame, handsome as sin, and smirking down at her with a knowing
grin.

“Had to sneak off to get a proper drink” was all Ginny said before turning back to the bar.
She immensely disliked the butterflies in her stomach and the rapid beating of her heart. She
hated that when he walked into a room, she felt like this. She declined telling Blaise she
didn’t have a boyfriend, he didn’t need that ammo against her.

“Ahh, no more fairy wine for the hardass Harpy then? What are you drinking?”

Ginny turned back towards Blaise, he was still smirking at her but was now shoulder to
shoulder with her. She sighed and looked down into her whiskey, she fucking hated Ministry
balls. Why was he even here and talking to her?

“Well I’d say you looked a bit sad over by the bar alone, figured I’d drop in to say hello. See
how my old Gryffindor chum has been these days.”

Ginny hadn’t realised she had said anything outloud but Blaise responded with his slick smile
and happy go lucky tone.

“Just needed a drink is all, I’m sure Hermione will find me at any moment and drag me back
in there.” Ginny gestured towards the fundraiser main floor, where people were mingling and
she was sure that money was being donated by the hundred galleons for the new Hogwarts
Library fund.

“Granger? Why isn’t Potter coming to find you? You both have barely been photographed
apart in the last year” Blaise commented, now sipping his own drink but staring down at
Ginny.

“You sound jealous, Zabini.”

“Maybe I am.” Ginny looked at Zabini in surprise. He had never contacted her, not once,
since the end of the war. The first month, she had waited, the second month she had cried
silently and alone, and the rest of the months she had avoided him at all costs. And she had
done a pretty damn good job staying away from him at events and ducking into stores in
Diagon Alley the few times she saw him. She knew that he had been at the Harpies game in
October, but it hadn’t been to see her, he was with his friends. She didn’t understand why he
was cornering her here, and why now? Ginny felt emotion rising in her chest, and she
suddenly, very much wanted to leave. Her hands started to shake a bit and Ginny instantly
plotted her exit, the walls of the giant ballroom already beginning to close in on her.

She must have looked frantic, because suddenly, Blaise was touching her elbow. Ginny
jerked back, feeling as if she had been burned, and a look of hurt flashed briefly across his
face.

“Ginny, are you --” He started, but she was gone. Walking briskly away and searching the
crowded room for Hermione, only to find her standing with Ron and Harry and she most
definitely was not going to go over there right now. Hermione could figure out that she had
left early and she would understand why when she saw Blaise.

The room started to feel tight and Ginny turned quickly towards the corridor which led to the
apparition garden. Fuck, the air was leaving her lungs quickly and she felt as if she may faint.
Ginny’s only focus was that at the end of the hallway she would be okay. She would be
home. She would not be here. She could break down and no one would know or see her.
Ginny was so focused on her descent down the hallway that she didn't hear the footsteps
behind her and the man whisper shouting her name. Her tunnel vision was set on her
apparition point and just 5 steps before the doorway, a hand grabbed her and Ginny found her
back to the wall and Blaise Zabini breathing heavily, staring down at her.

“I was saying your name Ginny, why didn’t you stop?”

Ginny ignored his question completely, her sanity feeling as if it was barely hanging on, and
Ginny, as always shoved those emotions down deep. As deep as she could, knowing her
explosion later would be worse, and instead asked what had been running through her mind
all night.
“Why now Blaise? Why now? Why are you following me now and pretending as if we are
friends and chummy and know each other? Why?”

Blaise’s smirk finally fell from his face and he looked uncomfortable in his fancy dress robes
for the first time. “I-- I told you, you looked a bit lonely at the bar.”

“That is utter bullshit. You give zero fucks about my loneliness. You can't just decide to
confront me one day. And you can't do it at a very public Ministry ball.. You can’t do that.
You--”

Blaise cut her off, “why not?” he stepped a bit closer and Ginny took a step backwards, to
find a wall solid against her back.

The pesky emotions were back. Ginny felt them rising in her chest and her eyes prickled.
Ginny swallowed, willing herself to get the words out of her throat.

“You don’t get to pretend like you know me. It’s been years, Zabini, years.” Ginny bit out but
hated that her voice sounded affected by the man standing in front of her.

A moment passed, and then another moment. Blaise ran his hand over his face, “I miss you,
Gin.” Ginny felt herself visibly flinch.

“You've done a shite job at showing it.” The words slipped out before Ginny could stop them.
Blaise took a chance and brushed a stray hair behind Ginny’s ear. Instead of the burn she felt
just minutes earlier, his touch instantly calmed Ginny’s anxiety but also stirred something
deep inside her. It wasn’t fair, all these emotions that he was bringing back up. Ginny didn't
want to love Blaise anymore, certainly not when he didn't love her back.

“I know, but I do. I know I fucked up Ginny, but I can’t get the image of you and stupid
Potter out of my brain. It was like each time I looked at the paper, you were in it together.
And each time I saw you in Diagon you did everything you could to avoid me. I didn’t want
that.”

Ginny felt a tear roll down her; “I told you before the battle…”
“I know, but the media fucked me up and I didn’t wanna love you if you didn’t love me too
and I most certainly didn’t want to need you if you didn't need me. And it seemed like you
were fine. And I thought I was becoming fine with it but when I saw you tonight standing at
the bar by yourself I realised that I do still love you and I do still need you.” Blaise's hands
ended up on each side of Ginny’s face and Ginny looked into his eyes. It was just something
in his eyes, that made Ginny realise that maybe, just maybe, what he was saying was true.

Maybe Ginny’s thoughts had taken her too long to gather because Blaise took a deep breath,
released her face, and took a step back. “It wouldn't have been right, Gin, if I didn’t tell you
this tonight. I just had to get it off my chest but if it's been too long, I get it.” Blaise started to
turn but Ginny saw her opportunity and instantly decided that she couldn’t live another two
years without Blaise Zabini. She took a running step into his arms, catching him around his
neck. Blaise took a step back but quickly locked his arms around her petite frame, a big
handsome grin on his face.

“You’re an absolute git, Blaise Zabini” Ginny murmured, her lips a short distance from his.

“And you’re a right terror, Ginny Weasley.”

Ginny grinned at him, for the first time that night, and then pressed her lips against his.

Maybe Ministry balls weren’t so bad after all.
