Pneumatic Hammer Machine

Abstract
A pneumatic hammer is commonly called or referred as a jackhammer or power
hammer. A pneumatic hammer is one of the important tools used by many workmen.
Pneumatic Hammers can be designed in many sizes and speeds and speed can be
maximized according to need. The Pneumatic hammer is also used for hammering the
metal, wooden, riveting steel, etc. uniformly around the pattern. It can be used even in
small scale industries. To operate such hammer, an air compressor is connected to the
hammer that feeds into the device. This proposed automated hammering machine can
be used for hammering metal sheet or screws etc. this follows fully automatic
hammering process. This automated Pneumatic hammer machine consists of a
pneumatic cylinder, metal links attached on the backside of hammer.
the hammer is mounted on the frame with the help of bolt in such a way that when the
pneumatic cylinder will be actuated the hammer will swing and hammering will be
done.

Pneumatic Hammer Machine

Introductions
A pneumatic hammer is one of the important tools used by many workmen
Pneumatic Hammers can be designed in many sizes and speeds and speed can
be maximized according to need. The Pneumatic hammer is also used for
hammering the metal sheet, and manufacturing operation in industries like
riveting, punching etc. uniformly around the pattern. It can be used even in small
scale industries. Also, time required for operation is less so it is useful in mass
production.
A hammer of the type having an impact tool driven by pressurized fluid has a
hammer body portion with a closed rearward end and an open forward end and
a piston longitudinally movably housed within the hammer body portion for
striking a tool mounted at the open forward end of the hammer body portion, to
thereby impact an object with the tool. The hammer has a fluid valve housed
within the closed rearward end of the hammer body portion rear wardly of the
piston and in communication with a source of high-pressure fluid for driving
the piston. The fluid valve has a valve body portion defining an interior chamber
and a continuous exterior side wall, and a longitudinal opening in
communication with the interior chamber.

Literature Review

• T b Stawell [1] August 2003 Tribology International 36(8):585-591

In this paper, experimental study was made of the occurrence of pneumatic hammer in
an externally pressurized air journal bearing having double plane admission. Various
parameters affecting the onset of pneumatic hammer were investigated. These were: -
supply recess depth, supply orifice diameter and bearing mass. In general, pneumatic
hammer is relatively easily avoided in journal bearings. However, achievement of
repeatable results proved difficult, because of the effects of external damping and
support stiffness. These factors are not incorporated in the existing theory. There were
a significant number of instances where pneumatic instability was not apparent,
although existing theory gave a strong indication of its occurrence. When pneumatic
hammer did occur, there was broad agreement between experimental results and
predicted trends as regards supply recess volume and supply orifice diameter, but not
as regards bearing mass. The effects of external damping were important.

In this study, the pneumatic hammer instability phenomena in the aerostatic journal
bearing–rotor system is analysed and discussed for different feeding hole
configurations theoretically and experimentally. The influences of the configuration of
the feeding holes on the nonlinear dynamics of the system are also investigated. The air
flow between the surfaces is modelled with Reynold’s equation and it is numerically
solved with differential transform and finite difference hybrid method. Three different
aerostatic bearings are modelled and simulated to investigate the influences of the
configuration of the holes for different angular speeds. An experimental test rig is
designed and tested for different rotor speeds to validate the obtained numerical results.
The dynamic response of the system is analysed using waterfall plots, bifurcation
diagrams, orbit plots, phase portrait and Poincaré map, which are drawn to determine
the pneumatic hammer instability region of the modelled system. The results reveal a
nonlinear dynamic response of the rotor center. In addition, the analysis shows that the
feeding hole configuration affects the rotor dynamics and the pneumatic hammer
instability region

Pneumatic Hammer Machine

Problem Definition
In Machine shop many applications where hammering operation is carried out
there utilize man power, but again there are some limitations like application of
force, frequency of force, accuracy for applied location of force.

Using pneumatic power, we can reduce human effort for hammering operation.
Using Automation reduces man power, only one worker can work on high load
hammering without Accidents.
