Oil properties
Textbook Chapter 2, Problems 2.1, 2.2, 2.8

Gas properties
Problems 2.9, 2.10, 2.11

Feel free to use Brill-Beggs-Z.xls, Carr-Kobayashi-Burrows-GasViscosity.xls, Hall-Yarborough-

Z.xls, MixingRule.xls, and OilProperties.xls, but remember that you must know very well the
equations which these spreadsheets use.

PROBLEM 2.1
Dead oil so set P = 14.7 psia. API = 25 implies oil specific gravity is 0.90. So expect a dead oil
density of 900 kg/m3 or 56 lbm/ft3. Use OilProperties.xls with P = 14.7 psia, gravity = 25 API, T =
100 F, and Rs = 0, we get density = 55.6 lbm/ft3.

PROBLEM 2.2
For P > Pb = 2500 psia, this oil is undersaturated. Thus the value of Rs will be the same at 2500
and 3000 psia, and we expect the oil density to be very slightly larger at the higher pressure,
while the oil viscosity should be somewhat larger at the higher pressure. Using the given values
in OilProperties.xls, we find
Property P = 2500 psia P = 3000 psia
Density 𝜌𝑜 43.4 lbm/ft 3 43.4 lbm/ft3
Viscosity 𝜇𝑜 0.79 cP 0.96 cP

PROBLEM 2.8
As Problem 2.2 except metric units. Note the different value and units of Rs in particular. We
find
Property P = 15 MPa P = 20 MPa
Density 𝜌𝑜 665 kg/m 3 665 kg/m3
Viscosity 𝜇𝑜 0.00047 Pa-s 0.00066 Pa-s

PROBLEM 2.9
Use MixingRule.xls with the given composition yields
Property value
Apparent molecular weight 21.1
Specific gravity (air = 1) 0.73
Pseudo-critical pressure 673 psia
Pseudo-critical temperature 400 deg R.
PROBLEM 2.10
Use Carr-Kobayashi-Burrows-GasViscosity.xls with the given specific gravity and temperature to
obtain
Gas viscosity at P and 90 deg C, cP
Pressure P, MPa yCO2 = yN2 = yH2S= 0 yCO2 = yN2 = yH2S= 0.02 yCO2 = yN2 = yH2S= 0.1

10 0.015 0.015 0.016
50 0.033 0.033 0.031

PROBLEM 2.11
Use Hall-Yarborough-Z.xls and Brill-Beggs-Z.xls to obtain
Z-factor at P and 80 deg C
yCO2 = yN2 = yH2S= 0 yCO2 = yN2 = yH2S= 0.1

10 0.890 0.885 0.916 0.918
50 1.19 1.17 1.12 1.10

Conclude that these correlations are equivalent.
