Data Science:
A field of study that is a combination of domain expertise, programming skills and knowledge of
mathematics and statistics to dig out crucial insights from data. Data scientists apply machine
learning algorithms to numbers, text, images, audio, video and more, producing artificial
intelligence (AI) systems that are capable of doing tasks that normally require human
intelligence. These insights can be used as a guide to decision making and strategic planning.

Case study:
It is an in-depth study of a person, group or an event which deals with the analysis of every
aspect of subject’s life and history to seek out patterns and causes of a particular behavior. The
purpose of a case study is to seek out as much information as possible about an individual or a
group to generalize to others.

Big Data Application:

A Big Data mobile application refers to a mobile application that leverages Big Data
technologies and techniques to collect, process, analyze, and present large volumes of data on
mobile devices. Big Data refers to the massive and complex datasets that are too large to be
processed effectively with traditional data management tools. Some examples include Amazon,
Airbnb, Facebook, Instagram and etc.
Title: Google Maps: Navigating the World with Big Data Analytics

Introduction:
A widely used navigation and mapping service google maps provides its users with accurate
directions, real-time location information and valuable insights about their surroundings using
the big data analytics and big data technologies. This case study will deep dive in how Google
Maps uses these features to enhance its user experience and functionality.
1. Data Collection:
Google Maps runs its services upon different sources of data, and these sources include satellite
imagery, GPS data from mobile devices, street view images and data from partner organizations.
Besides all these sources Google Maps also uses user generated data such as ratings, reviews and
location check-ins to maximize the precisions of data provided.
2. Real-time Traffic Data:
Another key factor of Googles precisions and traffic updates is the use of data analytics to
provide real-time traffic. To achieve this data is collected from millions of Android and iOS
devices that have location services turned on. This data includes the speed at which users are
moving, and it is anonymized and aggregated to provide insights into traffic patterns and
congestion.
3. Routing and Navigation:
To calculate fastest and most efficient routes for users Google Maps uses big data analytics
algorithms. In this calculation process Googles considers factors like road closures, traffic
conditions, accidents and historical traffic data to make dynamic routing decisions. In addition to
that continuous optimization is carried out on these algorithms to ensure users reach their
destinations as quickly as possible.
4. Predictive Analytics:
Google Maps not only provides routing and navigation but uses big data analytics to predict
future traffic patterns. This is done by analyzing historical data and viewing factors like time of
day, weather conditions, and special events. This prediction service includes traffic congestions
and travel times helping users plan their journey accordingly.

5. Location-based Recommendations:
Another use of Data analytics by Google Maps is by providing users with personalized location
recommendations by viewing and analyzing user’s search history, location history, and
preferences. This help enhancing user experience and drive engagement with the app.
6. Scalability and Reliability:
Google Maps handles a staggering amount of data and requests daily, making scalability and
reliability paramount. Google utilizes its extensive cloud infrastructure, including technologies
like Bigtable, BigQuery, and Kubernetes, to store and process the data efficiently. This ensures
that Google Maps can serve millions of users simultaneously without significant downtime.

Conclusion:
Google Maps is a prime example of how big data analytics and big data infrastructure are
utilized to create a highly functional and user-friendly mapping and navigation service. The
collection and analysis of vast amounts of data enable real-time traffic updates, predictive
routing, and personalized recommendations. Google Maps' commitment to continuous
improvement and its ability to leverage big data technologies make it an indispensable tool for
users worldwide.
