Final Assessment Test (FAT) – February 2022

Programme : M. Tech Automotive Mechatronics (Part-time) Semester : Fall 20 – 21

Code : MEE5027
Course : System Design and Control
Class nbr :
Faculty : Dr. Saravanakumar D Slot :
Time : 1 hour Max. Marks : 30

Answer any Six questions

1. Discuss the importance of Mechatronics applications in automated world in future

10
with any two examples.
2. Reduce the block diagram shown in figure to a single transfer function, T(s)= C(s)/R(s).

10

3. A fender is mounted on an automobile though dampers (to absorb collision energy)

and springs (so that the fender can recover after low-speed collisions). During a crash-
test, the automobile is moving at 2 m/s when its fender strikes a concrete barrier. The
vehicle mass, m, is 1,000 kg. (In comparison, the fender itself is essentially massless.)
The springs that mount the fender have a stiffness, k, of 1,000,000 N/m. Write a
differential equation for the deflection of the springs when the fender is in contact
10
with the barrier and determine the overall transfer function.

4. Consider the satellite altitude control system shown in the Figure 6a. The output of this
system exhibits continued oscillations and is not desirable. This system can be
10
stabilized by use of a tachometer feedback, as shown in Figure 6b. If 𝐾/𝐽 = 4, what will
be the value of Kh will yield the damping ratio to be 0.6?

5. Explain the process of feedback control system in detail with the example of vehicle
steering control system. Elaborate on process of improving the transient response 10

characteristics of closed loop response of the system using PID Controller.

6. Root locus of a system is shown in the figure.

10

i. Determine the open loop transfer function of the system. Justify your
answer.
ii. Comment on the location of each pole and zero as the system gain system
parameter varies from 0 to ∞.
iii. Comment on the stability of the system.
7. Explain the role of optimisation function and constraints in optimal system design
10
process.
