2023
RICE CROP MANAGER

The Philippines has plenty of land for farming and a climate appropriate for growing rice, but the

tropical country has battled for decades to produce enough of this food staple to support its rising

population. The Philippines remains the largest rice importer in South-east Asia and is the second-largest

global importer, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. In 2023, the Philippines’

Department of Agriculture is expecting to import around 2.5 million tons of rice, same as its annual

import average. Moreover, rice research is ongoing at several institutes and universities across the country

to increase rice production and aid Filipino farmers in enhancing crop durability and yield. Due to this

problem, RCM was made to provide small-scale rice farmers with crop and nutrient management advice

customized to farming conditions and needs.

RCM technology is an ICT science-based tool for best bet farming practices and crop

management guidelines to increase yield and income of rice farmers. Additionally, RCM makes

recommendations for main (NPK) and minor (Zn) nutrient inputs in farmer plots. These recommendations

correspond to the farmer's and plot's needs based on variables such as season, variety grown, and intended

production.

The students of BSA Animal Science were given an opportunity to execute the Rice Crop

Manager Advisory Service to the farmers of Brgy. Bibihan, Bansud Oriental Mindoro. The students were

advised by their instructor Ms. Roxanne Fabriquel on how to properly communicate with farmers. They

interviewed the farmers and collected all the data needed for the evaluation. The students clearly stated to

the farmers whether they can use the recommendation result or not. The data collected was put into the

RCM account of their instructor to get the results. The recommendation results were given to the farmers

to help them out to the next cropping season.
