Malnutrition
• Malnutrition is the condition that
develops when the body is deprived
of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients
it needs to maintain healthy tissues and
organ function. Malnutrition occurs in
people who are either undernourished or
over nourished. In the United States,
more children suffer from malnutrition
due to dietary imbalances than due to
nutritional deficiencies.

blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes
and over time leads to serious damage to many of the
body's systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.
Type 1
Diabetes
• If you have type 1 diabetes,
your body does not make
insulin. Your immune
system attacks and
destroys the cells in your
pancreas that make insulin.
Type 1 diabetes is usually
diagnosed in children and
young adults, although it
can appear at any age.
Type 2 Diabetes
• If you have type 2 diabetes, your body
does not make or use insulin well. You
can develop type 2 diabetes at any
age, even during childhood. However,
this type of diabetes occurs most
often in middle-aged and older
people. Type 2 is the most common
type of diabetes.
Anemia
• Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood
cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body's tissues. Having anemia,
also referred to as low hemoglobin, can make you feel tired and weak.
Osteoporosis

• Osteoporosis is a bone
disease that occurs when the
body loses too much bone,
makes too little bone, or
both. As a result, bones
become weak and may break
from a fall or, in serious cases,
from sneezing or minor
bumps.

Overweight

weight. To lose weight, a

Being overweight is a risk
factor for stroke, high blood
pressure, heart disease, and
several types of cancer.
Ways of Preventing and
Controlling Malnutrition and
Micronutrient Deficiency
Follow the Food Guide Pyramid
• The Food Guide Pyramid advises you regarding the proper number of servings you must consume
from each food group every day.
Eat a variety of grains daily.
• Grains contain fiber that helps prevent colon cancer. A grain-
rich diet helps you maintain a healthful weight. Whole grains
are advisable because they are low in fat.
Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.
• These foods are rich sources of vitamins that help prevent
heart disease and cancer. Being low in fat, they help you keep a
healthful weight.
Eat a diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
• Limit taking foods with saturated fats and cholesterol like meat
and dairy products. These foods can cause heart ailments and
cancer.
Eat and prepare foods with less salt
• Avoiding foods like chips, pretzels, and other salty foods can
help keep your blood pressure normal.
Avoid drinking alcoholic drinks.
• Drinking alcoholic beverages is intoxicating and harmful. Taken
in big amounts, they are damaging to your mental and physical
health.
Eating Disorder
• Anorexia nervosa is an extreme fear of gaining weight that drives a
person to starve himself/herself. It causes an individual who has this
Anorexia Nervosa disorder to be unnaturally thin with a low body weight. Anorexia is
life-threatening. An individual who has this disorder loses weight and
yet, may still think of himself/herself as "fat." He/She insists on
avoiding certain foods or on avoiding food at all.
• Bulimia nervosa is also a harmful disorder because it
involves purging or vomiting the food that an individual
Bulimia Nervosa has eaten. He or she does this to remain thin. Sometimes
an individual purges by engaging too much in physical
activities or by taking drugs such as diuretics and laxatives.
• Compulsive eating disorder takes place when an
Compulsive individual frequently stuffs himself/herself with large
amounts of food. A person who has compulsive eating

depressed, or anxious. He/She eats until he/she is so
full with food that makes him/her overweight.
