15. The infinitive form of a verb is the verb in its basic form, with or without ‘to’. It is also the
version of the verb that appears in the dictionary.

The infinitive with to is called the full infinitive, or the to-infinitive.

Examples: to talk, to eat, to play, to dance
The full infinitive can be used to express purpose, or to answer the question why.
Example: Mom left to buy milk.
Did you come to college to study or to party?
Sally went to the food truck to buy a hot dog.

When you use a full infinitive verb, the ‘to’ is part of the verb, not a preposition. An infinitive
verb is never conjugated.
Example: They went from walking to running really quickly.
You may think that ‘to running’ is an infinitive but the ‘-ing’ ending means it is not. This is a
gerund.

5. Are you wearing my dress?
6. Say ‘thank you’ to your aunt.

6. I want _______________ (eat) dinner at 5 o’clock.

19. The infinitive without 'to' is called the bare infinitive, or the base form of a verb. This is
the verb’s most basic form.
Examples: talk, eat, play, dance

While the bare infinitive is the verb’s most basic form, it can be used as the main verb after the
verb do, or most modal auxiliary verbs like can, may, might, could, should, would, will, and must.
