MATERIAL: Duplex stainless steels with 30 ≤ FPREN ≤40 and 40 < FPREN ≤ 45.

UNS NUMBER (IF KNOWN): Not applicable

SUGGESTED ALTERATION TO NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 (latest edition):

There were no requirements of liquid quenching for duplex stainless steels in the 2002 edition of NACE MR 0175.
During the rewrite process that proceeded 2003 years edition of NACE MR 0175 and ISO 15156, a requirement of
liquid quenching was added. It was probably added in order to avoid “aging after heat treatment that some people
tired in the past”.

The quenching of duplex is included in various product standards such as ASTM A789, ASTM A790 and ASTM 480.
“Liquid quenched air or rapid cooled by other means” are included in ASTM A789, ASTM A790 and ASTM 480 for
most duplex stainless steels. To be in line with the text in ASTM A789, ASTM A790 and ASTM A480 the term “rapid
cooled by other means” is used in the ballot. The ballot proposes that “Wrought and cast duplex stainless steels shall
be solution annealed and liquid quenched or rapid cooled by other means.” In addition a warning is proposed in
section A7.2 as indicated below.

1
Current wording in Section A.7.1 of ISO 15156-3:2009(E):

Table D.7 lists the chemical compositions of some duplex stainless steel alloys that can, but do not necessarily, meet
the restrictions of this materials group. In some cases, more restrictive chemistries than those shown in the Table D.7
are needed.

Current Table A.24 in Section A.7.2 of ISO 15156-3:2009(E):

2
Proposed new wording in Section A.7.1 of ISO 15156-3:2009(E):
Table D.7 lists the chemical compositions of some duplex stainless steel alloys that can, but do not necessarily, meet the
restrictions of this materials group. In some cases, more restrictive chemistries than those shown in the Table D.7 are needed.

The formation of deleterious phases and other precipitates, such as sigma phase, can reduce the cracking resistance. An
insufficient cooling rate after solution annealing may lead to formation of such deleterious phases and precipitates.

Proposed new wording of Table A.24 in Section A.7.2 of ISO 15156-3:2009(E):

Notes for balloters:-

3
The proposal must show the existing text or table from the latest edition of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 together with
the revised text or table in which precise details of the proposed changes are highlighted.
If appropriate, these details shall include, for a given material, any environmental limits of application and any
metallurgical limits related to materials chemistry, heat treatment, mechanical properties, hardness, etc. that govern its
acceptability within those environmental limits.
