PERSONAL CARE FORMULATION

Clear Gel Toothpaste using KELCOGEL®CG-LA gellan gum and

KELDENT® xanthan gum
DF 9255

This formulation is prepared at 45°C and produces a fluoride toothpaste with excellent
clarity, short, non-stringy flow, and excellent stand-up. The unique flavor release proper-
ties of KELCOGEL® CG-LA allow lower flavor and sweetener levels than are typically
used.

During preparation, the paste has low viscosity, allowing easy pumping and filling.
Gelation occurs on storage in the tube.

Preparation:
1. Add all deionized water and up to an equal amount of sorbitol to mixing vessel at 45°C.
2. Dissolve sodium citrate in water/sorbitol mixture.
3. Pre-slurry KELCOGEL CG-LA in 4 parts PEG 400. Add slurry to mixing vessel
under agitation. Mix for at least 5 minutes at 45°C. Fluid should be crystal clear,
without any signs of haziness, solids, or swollen particles.
4. Pre-slurry KELDENT in 4 parts PEG 400. Add slurry to mixing vessel under
agitation. Mix until gum is fully hydrated.
5. Add glycerol and remaining sorbitol and PEG.
6. Add salts* (fluoride and saccharin).
7. Add Zeodent 113 abrasive silica.
8. Add Zeodent 165 thickening silica.
9. Add color to suit.
10. Add flavor.
11. Reduce speed and add sodium lauryl sulfate slowly, mix until well dispersed.
12. Deaerate and package.
*Salts are added at this point to prevent localized gelation (of the KELCOGEL) that
may occur if added earlier in the process.
