Answer Question one and any other two questions.
Time: 2 hours
QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)
a) A drilling machine bores holes with a mean diameter of 0.5230cm and a standard
deviation of 0.0032cm. Calculate the 2-sigma and 3-sigma upper and lower control
limits for means of samples 4 and prepare a control chart. (4marks)
b) An acceptance sampling scheme consists of inspecting 25 items and rejecting the
batch if two or more non-conforming items are found;
i. Find the probability of accepting a batch containing 15% non-conforming
(2marks)
ii. Find also the probability of accepting batches containing 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and
non-conforming
(3marks)
c) Each of 20 lots of rubber belts containing 200 rubber belts. Numbers of defective
rubber belts in those lots are 410, 420, 324, 332, 292, 310, 282, 300, 320, 296, 392,
432, 294, 324, 220, 400, 258, 226, 460, and 280. Calculate control limits for fraction
defective chart and give your conclusions.

d) In a certain sampling inspection, the number of defectives found in 10 samples of 100
each are as given below:
16, 18, 11, 18, 21, 10, 20, 18, 17 and 21
Do these indicate that the quality characteristics under inspection is under statistical
Control (5marks)
e) If the average fraction defective of large sample of products is 0.1537. Calculate the
control limits given that the sub-group size is 2000. What modification do you need if
the sub-group size is not constant (4marks)
f) In a capability study of a lather used in turning a shaft to a diameter of 23.75±0.1 mm
a sample of 6 consecutive pieces was taken each day for 8 days. The diameters of
these shafts are as given below:

g) Construct the X and R chart and find out the process capability for the machine.

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)


a) A machine is set to deliver packets of a given weight. Eight samples of size 5 each
were recorded. Below are given relevant data;

Calculate the values of the centered line and the control limits for mean chart and
the range-chart and then comment on the state of control. (10marks)

QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)


a) A nation-wide mail order house desires to verify the accuracy of its clerical work in
completing invoices. Sub-groups of 200 are taken each day for 30 consecutive days
for inspection. A defective is defined as an invoice containing at least one of a number
of possible errors. The number of defectives found in each of these 30 groups are as
follows:

Construct control chart of the data and comment on the state of control (10marks)
b) The following is a double sampling plan

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
1) A firm is to introduce an acceptance sampling scheme. Three alternative plans are
considered.
Plan A Take a sample of 50 and accept the batch if no non-conforming items are
found,
otherwise reject.
Plan B Take a sample of 50 and accept the batch if 2 or fewer non-conforming items
are found.
Plan C Take a sample of 40 and accept the batch if no non-Conforming items are
found.
Reject the batch if or more are found. If one is found, then take a further
sample
of size 40. If a total of 2 or fewer (out of 80) is found, accept the batch,
otherwise reject.

(a) Find the probability of acceptance for each of the plans A, B and C if batches
are submitted containing
i. 1% non-conforming
ii. 10% no-conforming (7marks)
(c) Show that, for batches containing 1% non-conforming, the average number of
items inspected when using plan C is similar to the number inspected when using
plans A or B. (3marks)
2) A manufacturer receives large batches of components daily and decides to institute an
acceptance sampling scheme. Three possible plans are considered, each of which requires a
sample of 30 components to be tested:

Plan A Accept the batch if no non-conforming components are found, otherwise


reject.
Plan B Accept the batch if not more than one non-conforming component is found,
otherwise reject.
Plan C Accept the batch if two or fewer non-conforming are found otherwise reject

(a) For each plan, calculate the probability of accepting a batch containing
(i) 2% non-conforming
(ii) 8% non-conforming. (4marks)
(b) Which plan would be most appropriate in each of the circumstances listed below?
(i) There should be a high probability of accepting batches containing 2% non-conforming.
(2marks)
(ii) There should be a high probability of rejecting batches containing 8% non-conforming.
(2marks)
(iii) A balance is required between the risk of accepting batches containing 8% defective and
the risk of rejecting batches containing 2% non-conforming. (2marks)

QUESTION FIVE (20 MARKS)

a) An inspection station has been installed between two production processes. The
feeder process, when operating correctly, has an acceptable quality level of 3 percent.
The consuming process, which is expensive, has a specified lot tolerance proportion
defective of 8 percent. The feeding process produces in batch sizes; if a batch is
rejected by the inspector, the entire batch must be checked and the defective items
reworked. Consequently, management wants no more than a 5 percent producer’s risk
and, because of the expensive process that follows, no more than a 10 percent chance
of accepting a lot with 8 percent defectives or worse.
i. Determine the appropriate sample size, n, and the acceptable number of defective
items in the sample, c. (6marks)
ii. What is the probability that a lot with 5 percent defectives will be rejected? (4marks)

b) Ten samples each of size 5 are drawn at regular intervals from a manufacturing
process. The samples means ( ) and their ranges (R) are given below
