answers to “Case 1” questions.
I analyzed your answers and below is my general feed back to you,
First, I really appreciate your arguments. All are neither right nor wrong.
However, if you read your answer again, how many of you see those
answers are full of assumptions, which I never said.

Real Data…..
• Yes… In business terms we have to do a MARKET RESEARCH to collect real
data.
• Then we get an actual sense (idea) about a particular market (in our case 1,
we could have easily do a market research first, in that area)
• Then ………we can predict what to buy, when to buy, How many to
buy..etc. almost precisely (almost precisely means, close to 100%
correct).

• You will learn more about MARKET RESEARCH in IM module.

• Till that if you like to know how to do a market research, the below link will
direct you to a good simple article.

TT2305 5
Market Research is the first step in product
development process too.
• Why???
Simply because we develop products…….to sell.
Or…. in other words…. to do a profitable business in apparel sector.

Ok, let’s say we got an idea about the market that we are going to cater……
How are we going to develop products to fulfill the customer demand now??

What is the next step…..?

TT2305 6
Me…??
DESIGN the product I am a technologist. Can
I DESIGN garments?

• You are correct. You are a technologist. Technologists are involved

mainly in the manufacturing process.
• There are special set of people called FASHION DESIGNERS to do this.
• They are special and different to us. They get good,
bad or mostly weird ideas about garment designs..

I feel sad for

this Poor model

TT2305 7
We will now go through the few important
steps in fashion design

TT2305 8
Design inspiration
• Now stop for a moment and look for the meaning of inspiration please.

Design inspiration
• Fashion Designers’ inspiration for a new line can come from a variety of
sources that may have been a part of market research conducted.
Designers may be inspired by studying a picture, from a fabric print,
texture, studying about historical period or another culture, etc..
Colour inspiration
• The designer or design team study colour trend reports gathered during
the research phase and discuss a possible group of colours for the new line
of garments they are going to design.
• Can watch the below you tube if you like to see how inspiration are turned into designs.
Or …..continue to next page for illustrations

TT2305 11
Fashion Sketch
How does this shirt fit ?
The purpose of the fashion sketch is to show the design details. The
fashion sketch is all about the technical details, not the art. Even
though it can look beautiful with colors, shading & amazing
model wearing the clothes – this is not the purpose of it. Its
purpose is to show correctly the darts and seams of the garment.
Also to show the color combination and suggest styling (hair,
accessories). Often times designers would use fashion templates to
save time and draw directly over them. They can make simple pencil
drawings or detailed rendered sketches over them.

TT2305 12
Technical drawing

Only the garment design is drawn, without

an indication of the body. Technical drawings
include a close-up sketch of the garment
detail such as pocket, cuff, front and back
views. Technical drawing is often useful in
pattern making and production. In general,
technical drawings might incorporate fabric
swatches, color swatches, close-ups of the
logos…..The purpose here is to
communicate the design idea
precisely. Technical drawings show the
clothes as if they were laid flat on a table.

TT2305 13
Fashion Illustration

How is wearing this shirt going

to make me feel?
Now fashion illustration is the fun, artistic
sister of the former two. The fashion
illustration doesn’t care about technical
details. All it wants is to make you desire
the clothes! It talks the emotional
language. It creates mood, a fantasy!
That’s why oftentimes used in
promotional ads and magazines.

TT2305 14
Design Presentation
At the line review meeting or first adoption meeting, the designer
presents the design sketches to the review team (merchandiser, fit or
production engineer, head of sample sewing).

This may associated with mood/story boards and fabric swatches.

The review team evaluates each of the design and select some
designs to continue with the design development stage.

We will continue from here next time……

TT2305 15
Ok till next time………………
• Please prepare a summary mind map of what you learn today. I
would like to ask some of you to present (upload) it next time.
