a. describe and define;
 union of sets
 intersection of sets
b. perform the set operations;
 union of sets
 intersection of sets
c. appreciate the importance of sets.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Operations of Sets: Union and Intersection of Sets
Reference: Quarter 1 – Module 1 Mathematics 7 pg. 13-16
Materials: Laptop, Projector
Methods of Teaching: 4A’s

III. PRESENTEATION
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Pre-Activity

“May I request everybody to please Tiene:

stand. Ms. Tiene, kindly lead the “Let us bow down our heads and feel
prayer.” the presence of God, let us pray.

Our Father, Who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass
against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.”

“Good morning class!” “Good morning ma’am”

“Ms. Secretary, who’s absent today?” “No one is absent today, ma’am.”

“Okay, very good.”

“Before you take your sit, pick up

pieces of paper and check the
alignment of your chairs.”

“You can now take your sit.” “Thank you, ma’am.”

“Class, before we start, I want you to

be acquainted with our classroom
rules.

1. Keep quiet unless you are

asked to speak.
2. Do not do unnecessary things
that might distract the class.
3. Respect each other.
4. Actively participate in the
class.”

“Am I understood, class?” “Yes ma’am.”

“Good”

ACTIVITY

“As we all know, this is our first

discussion in the first quarter. So,
before we proceed to our discussion
let’s have an activity.”

“Are you ready class?” “Yes ma’am.”

“You will be grouped into two. Group 1

is on the right side, and Group 2 is on
the left side.”

“Am I clear?” “Yes ma’am.”

“Good. You can now proceed to your

respective groups.”

“Now, what you are going to do is to

group these animals whether it is an
herbivores, carnivores or an
omnivores.”

“What animals are herbivores?”

“Yes Lopez?” “The animals that are herbivores are

Horse, Cow, Koala, Zebra and
Giraffe.”

“Next question, what animals are

carnivores?”

“Anyone?”

“Yes Sumampan?” “There are 5 animals under

carnivores, these are Lion, Wolf,
Crocodile, Eagle and Frog.”

“Okay, very well.”

“Last one, what animals are

omnivores?”

“Yes Bedas?” “Upon brainstorming with my

groupmates, we come up with an
answer that Pig, Ostrich, Dog, Bear
and Fox are omnivores.”

“Great, so everyone got the correct

answer. Let’s give ourselves a
‘Congratulations Clap’.”
ANALYSIS

“What have you observed from the

activity you just did?”

“Yes Calunsag?” “I have observed that these pictures

only shows the group of animals that
belong to its eating habit.”

“That is right. These animals indeed

belongs to its natural eating habit.
Very good observation, Calunsag.”

ABSTRACTION

“So, does anyone here familiar with

the word set?”

“Yes Villaver?” “If I am not mistaken ma’am, set is a

collection of objects.”

“Very good. That is right.”

“How about union and intersection?”

“Villaver again? I want another hand.”

“Don’t be afraid to raise your hand,

just share with us your ideas about
these words.”

“Yes Bedas?” “Union and intersection ma’am are

operations of sets.”

“Great answer, Bedas.”

“Turns out I will not be having a hard

time discussing our lesson today
because some of you have already an
idea about sets and operations of
sets. Great. Now, for our discussion.”
Sets
- The groups are called sets. Set
maybe thought as a collection
of objects.

Example:

A set of mountains A set of books

A set of buildings

Well-defined Set
- In mathematics, set is well-
defined group of collection of
objects that share common
characteristics. The object
contained in the set are called
element.

A set can be named using capital

letters like A, B, C, D…Z and we use
braces { } to group the elements of set
separated by commas.

If a set contains many elements, we

often use three dots, …, called
ellipsis.

Example of well-defined set:

1. The set of primary colors.

{red, yellow, blue}

2. The sets of all even numbers.

{2, 4, 6, 8,…}

3. The set of letter in the word

“arrange”
{a, r, n, g, e}

Operations of Sets
Name Symbol Definition
Union ∪ Is the set
containing all
elements that
are in A or in
B.
Intersectio ∩ The set that
n consist of all
elements that
are both in A
and B.

Union of Sets
- The union of sets A and B,
written as A ∪ B, is the set of
element that are members of A,
or members of B, or members
of both A and B.

Example:

1. If A = {1,2,3} and B = {1, 2, 4, 5,

6}, then A ∪ B = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

2. If A = {a, b, c, d, e} and B = {a,

e, i, o, u}, then A ∪ B = {a, b, c,
d, e, i, o, u}

3. If A = {Monday, Tuesday, Wed,

Thursday, Friday} and B =
{Saturday, Sunday}, then A ∪ B
= { Monday, Tuesday, Wed,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
Sunday}

Intersection of Sets
- The intersection of two sets A
and B, written as A ∩ B, is the
set of element common to both
sets A and B.

Example:

1. If A = {1,2,3} and B = {1, 2, 4, 5,

6}, then A ∩ B = {1, 2}

2. If A = {a, b, c, d, e} and B = {a,

e, i, o, u}, then A ∩ B = {a, e}
3. If A = {Monday, Tuesday, Wed,
Thursday, Friday} and B =
{Saturday, Sunday}, then A ∩ B
= { } or ∅

APPLICATION

“Okay, we are done with our

discussion. So, let’s have another
activity. This will test you if you really
understand our discussion.”

“Same group.”

“I have here some cardboard. What

you are going to do is to write your
answers here as fast as you can”

“Are you guys ready?”

“Yes ma’am!”
“Great. I will only give you 3 minutes
to finish answering. After that, you will
choose one representative from each
group to present and explain your
answers in front.”

“Am I clear?”
“Yes ma’am.”
Direction: Answer the following by
getting the union and intersection of
sets.

Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8}
B = {2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8}
C = {3, 5, 6, 7, 9}

1. A∪B
2. A∩C
3. A∪C
4. A∪B∪C
5. A∩B∩C

IV. EVALUATION

Direction: Answer the following by

getting the union of sets and
intersection of sets and make a Venn
Diagram.

Let the universe be the set U = {1, 2,

3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}

Let A = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4}
B = {0, 2, 4, 6, 8}
C = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

1. A∪B
2. A∩B
3. A∪C
4. A∩ C
5. A∪B∪C
