Crazy Rich Asian

Samantha Afra A

Just imagine you got a boyfriend who's just an ordinary academician on campus.
One day, you were brought to his native land on Singapore and found out that your
boyfriend was part of the uber-rich people in singapore, it might sounds great but until
you start to faces many problem and realizes that be with or being rich is not only about
having prosperity and living in luxurious, instead it feels you enter a whole new
different world that beyond your imagination. And that is Crazy Rich Asian.
Crazy Rich Asians is a 2013 romance comedy novel by American author Kevin
Kwan about a young Asian American woman who travels with her boyfriend to his
native Singapore and finds herself suddenly thrust into the cutthroat world of Asia’s
uber-rich. Kwan based the novel of his own experiences growing up in Singapore. In
2018, Crazy Rich Asians was adapted into a romantic comedy film of the same name,
directed by John M. Chu.
Crazy Rich Asian explains the dissimilarity culture between an American born
Chinese and a pure Singaporean Chinese. Rachel Chu as an American born Chinese being
portrayed that she didn’t really know well about her own ethnic’s culture, and it seems
like she didn’t even care that much. It’s completely the opposite of her boyfriend’s, Nick
Young, who is a son of an uber rich family in Singapore that still do their ancestor’s
culture.
This whole movie pictures the culture beautifully. It shows us the beauty of
Singapore, the luxurious lifestyle, the diverse of people, and the Chinese culture such as
dumpling. Dumpling is not just a dumpling. It has its own history and glory meaning
behind it. Prosperity and wealth. The movie shows a scene where Rachel Chu and Nick’s
family gather in the dining room to make dumplings. It tells that it’s a must that children
need to hereditary the culture to respect the ancestor.
The movie also served the complexity on how economic gap really plays a big
part in social problems and even the stratification of the family. It can be known by the
fact that Eleanor Young (Nick’s mother) was being discriminated against by her mother
in law because of she did not come from an old money family. Even though she was able
to maintain the family well and try to fit in into her husband’s family, she’s still being
looked at as an outsider by the mother-in-law.
Overall, Crazy Rich Asian is a great movie. The concept, idea, story, and
everything in this movie is well portrayed and very comforting to watch. This movie
teaches us to be diplomatic to solve any of the problems. Communication is the key, and
an open heart is needed.
