CHAPTER 1

Introduction

The impact of financial shortage on academic success is one of the many obstacles that
students face in their aim of an education. This study explores the particular domain of Arellano
University - Apolinario Mabini Campus Senior High School ABM (Accountancy, Business, and
Management) students, investigating the complex relationship between financial shortage and
their capacity to fulfill mandatory academic requirements. These students' academic journeys are
characterized by the challenging balancing act they must do in order to pursue educational
achievement while overcoming financial obstacles that could obstruct their advancement.

Arellano University is a microcosm where the impact of financial hardship on academic

achievement is evident. In order to shed light on the difficulties these students encounter, the
research attempts to untangle the complexity surrounding the interaction between financial
restrictions and adherence to educational standards. Through an examination of this crucial
intersection, the research aims to provide significant perspectives that can guide tactics and
measures intended to promote a more welcoming learning atmosphere and guarantee fair chances
for academic achievement for Senior High School ABM students.

Background of the Study

In the backdrop of a globalized era, education stands as the pivotal foundation for
individual endeavors, shaping human capital and fostering overall well-being (Battle & Lewis,
2002). However, financial constraints have become a formidable hurdle for students, particularly
in the Philippines, leading to disruptions in their academic pursuits.

As Acbang (2019) asserts, the vulnerability of treasures and money to fluctuations

implies an inherent risk of encountering financial shortages. In the Philippine context, this reality
manifests in a significant number of students discontinuing their studies due to insufficient funds.
Some resort to a delicate balance of work and study to sustain their personal and educational
needs.
Bodvarson and Walker (2004) extend the discussion beyond basic needs, emphasizing the
broader spectrum of expenses faced by students in an academic institution. Transportation costs,
healthcare, miscellaneous school expenses, and more compound the financial burden on students,
amplifying the significance of addressing this issue.

Long and Railey (2007) illuminate the multifaceted impact of financial stress on students,
transcending academic performance to affect their physical and mental well-being. The strain
imposed by inadequate financial resources exacerbates the challenges faced by students pursuing
education in an increasingly demanding environment.

In this context, the research focuses on Senior High School ABM (Accountancy,
Business, and Management) students at Arellano University - Apolinario Mabini Campus,
shedding light on the pervasive issue of financial shortage. By understanding the intricate
interplay between financial constraints and academic performance, the study aims to contribute
valuable insights for crafting effective interventions and fostering a more inclusive educational
landscape.

Statement of the Problem

The aim of this study is to analyze the Financial Shortage in Complying School Requirements
that Affect the Academic Performance of Senior High School ABM Students in Arellano
University – Apolinario Mabini Campus.

Specifically, it aims to identify:

1. The respondent profile in terms of:

a. Gender
b. Age
c. Year level
2. To what extent do financial shortages contribute to challenges in Senior High School
ABM students' compliance with academic requirements at Arellano University -
Apolinario Mabini Campus?
3. How does the impact of financial shortage on compliance with school requirements
translate into measurable effects on the academic performance of Senior High School
ABM students?

Significance of the Study

Students. This study will provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges these
students face, shedding light on the specific factors hindering their academic progress.

Parents. This research will give insights into the challenges their Senior High School ABM
students may face due to financial shortages in meeting school requirements. Understanding
these challenges helps parents become more aware of the potential impact on their children's
academic performance and overall well-being

Teachers. This study will provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by students,
helping teachers understand the contextual factors influencing academic performance.

School Faculties. The study's findings can inform the development of academic strategies that
consider the financial limitations of students.

Future Researchers. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable reference for researchers
interested in exploring similar issues in different institutions or regions.

Scope and Delimitation

The study is limited to Senior High School students, excluding other levels within the
institution. However, the focus is specifically on students enrolled in the ABM track, narrowing
the scope to this academic specialization.

Therefore, respondents must fall within the age bracket of 16 to 19 years, providing a
targeted exploration of the financial challenges within this specific developmental stage.
The primary method for data collection will be through structured interviews with the
identified respondents. This approach allows for in-depth insights into the personal experiences,
perceptions, and coping mechanisms related to financial constraints among Senior High School
ABM students.

Assumption of the Study

The study assumes that financial shortages significantly impact the ability of Senior High
School ABM (Accountancy, Business, and Management) students at Arellano University to meet
their school requirements, thereby affecting their academic performance. This assumption is
based on the belief that financial constraints may hinder access to essential educational
resources, materials, and activities necessary for optimal learning experiences.

Theoretical Framework

The study on financial shortage's impact on Senior High School ABM students' academic
performance at Arellano University - Apolinario Mabini Campus draws on key theoretical
frameworks.

Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986) underscores the influence of observational

learning and self-efficacy on behavior, suggesting that students' academic performance may be
shaped by observing others' experiences with financial challenges.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (1943, 1954) posits that fulfilling basic physiological and
safety needs is essential before focusing on higher-level needs, such as education; financial
shortage is viewed as a barrier hindering students' full engagement in academic pursuits.

The Academic Engagement Theory emphasizes factors contributing to emotional,

behavioral, and cognitive involvement in academic activities, noting that financial shortage can
lead to increased stress and limited resources, impacting engagement and performance.
Lastly, the Equity Theory (Adams, 1963) suggests that students perceiving a lack of
financial resources compared to peers may experience frustration and demotivation, affecting
academic performance.

These theoretical frameworks provide a foundational understanding of the intricate

relationship between financial shortage and academic performance among Senior High School
ABM students, guiding further research in this area.
