Basic Productivity Presentation Tool

Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: What Do I Wanna Be When I Grow Up

Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten Social Studies
Content Standard Addressed: SSKE1 Describe the work that people do such as: police officer, fire
fighter, soldier, mail carrier, farmer, doctor, teacher, etc.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
Basic Productivity Tools be able to do by the end of this lesson:
Creative Communicator- 1.6.d: Students My students should be able to identify what
publish or present content that customizes jobs there are and what they do. If a job title
the message they wish to get across. is being named, they should be able to tell
me what the basic roles of that career are. Or
they should be able to be given job roles and
name the job title. I hope for them to learn
about how many types of jobs there are out
there and find out what peaks their interests.
Knowing the variety of jobs out there helps
kids find what may interest them down the
road and have something to strive for.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The learning goal for this lesson is for the students to pick a job that may interest them and
make a slide or two of their own to explain why they want to be this when they grow up. I
want them to read more into the type of job that interests them. Then pull all the slides
together to have an e-book of their own.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply. (Sometimes only one option will
apply.)

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I plan for my students to each produce a slide, which is based around what they want to be
when they grow up. As students in kindergarten may not fully know how to use PowerPoint
on their own, I would want to help guide them as they work. After showing the e-book I have
created, I would ask them the big question. “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
From here I give the students a worksheet to gather what information they would need for
their slide. I would make computers and books available for researching ideas and gaining
more knowledge on the career. Then once they have filled this out, and have created an open
PowerPoint document, I would help my students create their slide with the information they
have gathered. I could do this up on the board so they could follow along and ask questions
along the way. Once the slides are finished, I would go through and make a small note for
each one so that no child feels singled out. Once they are fixed, if necessary, we can finish by
presenting each slide in front of the class, mine as well, and end the lesson.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
The way I would manage the technology would be to only give the students 5-10 minutes
after the video to get the information to fill out their worksheets. The worksheets will play a
role in their learning goals, as it is what is needed for their own slide. Then when we move to
each creating a slide, I would have my screen on the board and collaborating right along with
them to keep them on track. This should take 5-10 minutes as we would all be working at the
same pace. After I look through the slides and give feedback, I would give them 5 minutes to

make corrections if needed. Lastly, we would spend 10-15 minutes, longer if it takes more
time, to have each student be able to present their slide. Here they can put their hard work
to the test.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I chose to use PowerPoint as it is an easier platform to work with, when creating a
presentation. I will have my students use the same platform in which I used to create the E-
book used within the lesson. Learning to use PowerPoint is a great learning experience as
they will use it all throughout school and in their future careers. Think this is huge in how we
can show different representations as it can be used in so many ways. It can be used as a
means of just telling information or it can be used as an interactive element. It also gives a
student a way to express themselves in their own unique way.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I think it will set a tone for how a student may approach creating slides in a presentation. By
giving them a worksheet to build off, we are giving them the steppingstones for success. That
way when they come to create presentations down the road, they will be able to have a
process for gathering certain information. I really look forward to seeing what my students
aspire to be. Also, why they want to be in that job and how they present that job.
