Balancing Chemical Equations Practice
Balancing Chemical Equations Practice
Atoms are not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction. Scientists know that there must be
the same number of atoms on each side of the equation. To balance the chemical equation, you
must add coefficients in front of the chemical formulas in the equation. You cannot add or change
subscripts!

4. Balance the following equations:
a. 2Mg + O2 2MgO
Mg = 2 Mg = 2
O= 2 O=2
b. 2Ca + O2 2CaO
Ca =2 Ca =2
O =2 O =2
c. N2 + 3H2 2NH3
N =2 N =2
H =6 H =6
Cu =4 Cu =4
O =2 O =2
C =1 C =1
H =6 H =6
O =6 O =6
Balance each equation. Be sure to show your lists (as was practiced above)! Remember you cannot
add subscripts or place coefficients in the middle of a chemical formula.
