How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I would begin this lesson by asking my students if they know the jobs of their parents. I would
be looking for common occupations, such as police officer, fire fighter, teacher, doctor, etc.
and seeing if my students know some of the tasks that these professions perform. I then
would introduce the students to PowerPoint and show them the example of my digital
storybook. My students will include images and texts to describe each job. As the teacher, I
will guide students by demonstrating how to use PowerPoint effectively for this assignment,
by highlighting relevant features. I will provide students with specific feedback as I see them
working on this assignment. I may also have students share their progress with their peers to
receive simple feedback from their peers. To conclude the lesson, students will share their
digital storybooks with their classmates, and we will rediscuss the various occupations and
the reasons that people work these occupations.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
To keep students engaged in the activity and managing their behavior, I would have students
create a plan for their storybook prior to creating it. I can make copies of a storyboard and
have students plan their ideas so that once they begin using their technology, they can
quickly create their story and not get sidetracked. By preplanning, the students can save time
and only must put what they have on their paper on their digital book. I would also have my
students on a time limit. Although they are younger, I feel that having them on a time limit
would keep them on task and help them to be more effective during their planning.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This activity supports the UDL framework, specifically representation, action, and expression.
PowerPoint allows students to present information in various formats, such as images and
text. Various learners can benefit from this tool due to the accessibility for both visual and
auditory learners. PowerPoint also provides flexibility in how students understand and
express their understanding. Students can choose how they want to describe the occupations
and what photos they want to choose to represent each occupation. PowerPoint also is user-
friendly and allows students to work at their own pace with customizable features.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

The activity that I have designed will promote student engagement by providing a hands-on
activity for students to explore and describe various occupations. Students will create their
own digital storybook and deepen their understanding of occupations and digital literacy. I
believe when all of the students finish their digital storybooks and share amongst their peers,
they will be able to share their achievements and see the creativity of one another.
