BA4206 – Business Analytics

Question Bank Unit - 3
Part – A (2 marks)
1. What is Descriptive Analytics?
Descriptive analysis is a commonly used form of data analysis whereby historical
data is collected, organized and then presented in a way that is easily understandable.
2. Define mean deviation.
The arithmetic average of the absolute deviation of a series is known as mean
deviation. This deviation is calculated from anyone of the measures of average such as
mean, mode and median.
3. Define mode.
Mode is the value of the variable for which the frequency is maximum and it is
denoted by Z or Mo.
4. Define Standard Deviation.
Standard deviation is a measure of the amount of dispersion of a set of values.
5. Differentiate between skewness and dispersion.
Dispersion Skewness
It measures the tendency of a dataset It measures the asymmetry in a statistical
distributed over a range in statistical distribution from the normal distribution
analysis
It deals with the distribution of values of a It studies whether the distribution of
set of data around the central point values is symmetric or asymmetric

6. Define probability.
Probability is the mode of expression of knowledge or belief whether the event has
occurred or will occur.
7. What is point estimation?
The specific value of the sample statistic used to estimate a population parameter
is known as point estimation.
8. Write three objectives of measures of central tendency.
i) Compute the mean, median and mode of distributions.
ii) Find the five-number summary of a distribution.
iii) Apply measures of central tendency to compare data sets

9. Define Bowley’s coefficient of skewness.

It is based on quartiles. If a distribution is symmetric then the first and third quartiles
are equi-distant from the median.
10. What is statistical estimation?
Statistical estimation involves estimating a population parameter with a simple
statistic.
11. What is point estimation?
The specific value of the sample statistic used to estimate a population parameter
is known as point estimation.
12. What is interval estimation?
The fixed interval of scores where the population’s mean or some other parameter
is expected to fall when that parameter is to be estimated from the given sample data is
known as interval estimation.
