President’s Report: It was delightful to enter the hall and see how
beautifully it was decked out. Many thanks to Peter and Marilyn who did
a splendid job of setting up and decorating individual tables and chairs
for us to celebrate our last meeting for the year. Members had brought in
a huge selection of food and Christmas fare to share with drinks and
lollies provided by the Club for a great evening. Members were also
generous in their donations for our charity hamper. Once again, many
varied genres were presented to give our judges a good work out. Thanks
must go to their dedication of turning up every month to impart their
knowledge. We finished the festivities with our monster raffle. Members
each provided a present for the table and most people went home with a
gift they selected. Interestingly the wine bottles seemed to leave earliest!
Nominations were received for next year’s committee which will be
decided at our first meeting in February. I would personally like to thank

members who work quietly in the background to make this Club so
successful.

RECOMMENDATION for LIFE MEMBERSHIP 2024:

Maureen Hazledine
Maureen Hazledine has been a member of The Gawler and
Districts Orchid Club for 27 years.
In that time she has established herself as a very good grower of
orchids. She is very well known for the way that she presents her
plants, regardless of genera, in very good condition and very well
grown. The quality of her plants has resulted in her receiving
multiple AOC awards and winning Grand Champion at several
Club shows. Maureen has supported the Club for many years by:

(a) working multiple shifts on the trading table at Club shows;

(b) assisting the judging at monthly meetings and shows by
acting as a penciller for the judges when required;
(c) giving talks at Club meetings on the preparation of show

GDOC 5 January 2024

plants and the cultural elements of different genera such as
Paphiopedilums;
(d) volunteering to be stand-by replacement speaker in the event
that a scheduled speaker had to cancel;
(e) bringing plants to shows for both the display and the trading
table as well as benching plants at Club meetings.

Maureen has always been polite and welcoming to members and

willingly shares her vast knowledge with members who ask for
advice. At Club meetings, and at shows, Maureen has made
herself available to talk to members with any queries on growing
or showing their orchids. The committee unanimously
recommends Maureen for life membership.

Committee Membership 2024: It is expected that there will be a

few vacancies on the Committee for 2024. If you are interested and
would like to support your club by serving in that way – please
speak with a current committee member. The AGM 2024 is
scheduled to be held on February 8th 2024.

Plant displays at meetings: Club members are encouraged to bring

plants that have an interesting or impressive display to share with
club members (even though they might not be judged for points).
Judges may still choose to give a commentary regarding plants as
displayed on this table. Members are reminded of the 6-month
ownership rule for display of plants for judging. Please respect this
arrangement. Members have requested that plants remain on display
for 15/20 minutes after close of the meeting to allow viewing. Your
assistance in this regard would be appreciated. These plants are for
VIEWING ONLY, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH
