GEOTHERMAL ENERGY LOCATION

GEO (EARTH)+ THERMAL (HEAT) GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IS OFTEN LOCATED AT
PLATE BOUNDARIES WHERE THE EARTH’S
Geothermal resources refer to the thermal energy stored CRUST CONTINOUSLY INTERACTS WITH THE
in the earth’s crust. HOT MANTLE BELOW.

ADVANTAGES OF GEOTHERMAL
ENERGY
1. Environmentally friendly – the carbon footprint
of the geothermal power plant is smaller
compared to conventional fossil fuels.
2. Renewable – the earth’s warm water reservoir
replenishes themselves naturally.
3. Rapidly evolving - geothermal energy is
currently a heavily researched topic due to its
potential.
4. No fuel required - since geothermal energy is
naturally occurring, there is no need for fuels.

DISADVANTAGES OF GEOTHERMAL
ENERGY
1. Location restricted – geothermal power plants
must be built where energy is accessible.
2. Environmental side effects – although
geothermal energy generally does not emit
greenhouse gasses, many of these gasses are
released into the atmosphere during excavation.
3. Earthquakes -geothermal energy may also risk
earthquakes due to the changes in the earth’s
structure caused by the digging.
4. High cost – geothermal energy is an expensive
resource to exploit.
5. Sustainability – geothermal energy must always
be properly managed to maintain its functions.
