Video Presentation Guidance

For the video presentations, students are asked to submit an mp4 video file of their
presentation that features video of both their slides (or other visual aids) and themselves
as they give their presentation. How students achieve this depends on their computer set
up.

Students can create this video using whatever tools they find suitable, but the resulting
video must show the slides for their presentation and video of the student speaking.

On a Windows PC, one way to do this is by recording a narrated PowerPoint presentation

using the PowerPoint desktop application.

TIP! Make sure you’re using the correct version of PowerPoint: To install the desktop apps
on a personally-owned computer (Windows or Mac):

1. Open a web browser and log in to http://portal.office.com with your University

credentials (i.e. ab12345@bristol.ac.uk username and password).
2. On the Office 365 welcome page, click on Install Office in the top right and
select Office 365 apps. Follow the on-screen download instructions to complete the
installation.

1. Open your PPT presentation

2. Go to slideshow tab at the top of the screen
3. Click on the record slideshow section, by clicking the arrow it will reveal the two
options
4. You can either record from the beginning or you may need to select record from
current slide
5. This should open the presentation in recording mode (black around the edge of
screen)
6. Go to bottom right hand corner and see video and mic icons
7. If they have a line going through the icon then click on it to activate
8. Click on mic first, then video
9. Press the red circle button in top left-hand corner when ready to record
10. Click the white square to stop
11. After stopping the recording, you will see a speaker icon appear in the corner of
the slide, this shows that this slide includes recorded audio.
12. Once you are done, you can then export an mp4 of your presentation.

TIP! Be sure to pause speaking before switching slides in order to make sure the audio
doesn’t get cut off or distorted.
For Mac or Linux users or students who don’t want to use PowerPoint, it is also possible to
produce a presentation using screen recording software that captures both the slides (or other
visual aids) and a video of the presenter. A number of options for this exist and a few of them
are listed below. There are many more ways to do this, so please use whatever tools work
best for you.

TIP! As with using any new piece of software, it is important to try out the recording
software used before recording the final presentation to ensure that you understand how it
functions in order to achieve quality results.

TIP! Be sure as you’re recording that your image does not obscure the content of the
slides.

Submitting suitably sized video

There is often a 1gb limit on the size of files to be submitted, so be sure that the video of
your presentation is below 1gb.

PowerPoint
If you are using Microsoft PowerPoint to create your video, be sure to set the video quality
to “standard,” “HD,” or “Internet quality”.

Other video sources

For presentation videos created using other tools, students can use a tool such as
Handbreak (https://handbrake.fr/) to reduce the size of their video.
In Handbreak, first load the video file you want to convert.

Then select the video quality you want to convert the video to:
Then press “start” and wait for the conversion to be completed.
