FIRST AID IN CASE OF ELECTRIC SHOCK
DO NOT TOUCH THE VICTIM WITH YOUR BARE HANDS until the circuit is broken. SWITCH OFF. If this is not possible,
PROTECT YOURSELF with DRY insulating material and pull the victim clear of the conductor.
1. If possible, lie the victim on his back with his head slightly higher than his feet. Clear the
mouth and throat of any obvious obstruction.
2. Kneel on one side of the victim, level with his head. LIFT THE JAW AND TILT THE
HEAD BACK AS FAR AS POSSIBLE (Figs. 1a and 1b)
5. Start with four quick breaths and then continue with one breath every five seconds (i.e.
12 times a minute). This should be continued until the victim revives or a doctor certifies
death.
6. As consciousness returns the victim will start to breathe on his own, and a `pink` colour
replaces the `blue` look: this is the time to stop resuscitation Continue to hold his chin up
and so keep the airway clear.
8. In the case of severe facial injuries it may be necessary to do a manual method of artificial respiration (Silvester-
Brosch or Holger Nielsen). Briefly, these methods apply compression to the ribcage with the victim lying on his back
(S-B) or face down (H.N.) with associated movement of his arms up and out. The cycle of movement should take
about five seconds, i.e. the normal breathing phase.
9. Whatever the method, it is ESSENTIAL to commence resuscitation WITHOUT DELAY and to send for medical
assistance immediately.
TREATMENT FOR BURNS
If the victim is also suffering from burns, then, without hindrance to resuscitation, observe the following:

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
This manual describes the theory of operation and maintenance of the Advent APS
3100 Protection Switch.
Its function is to act as an automatic 1:1 redundancy switch between two AUC 3141or
AUC3061upconverters.
With the addition of a compact redundant power combiner (CRPC) and two HPA’s,
redundancy at the HPA stage can also be provided.
Manual control of either the converter or HPA switching can be done via the front panel
or remotely, via a serial link.
The serial connection would typically be to an Advent Redundancy Controller model
ARC30X0 for remote control and monitoring.
The unit is weatherproof and can be used in flyaway, mobile or fixed earth stations.
A typical system layout is shown below.
1.2 FUNCTION
The protection switch assembly contains a control pcb which drives a SPDT coaxial
switch, routing one of the two RF inputs to two outputs for feeding HPA’s. The two
outputs are 90° phase split, fine matching of the phase is provided by an adjustment
screw on the phase splitter and matching of amplitude is provided by addition of
internal attenuators.
The control pcb senses the status of the converters and HPA’s and, in ‘AUTO’ mode
responds accordingly.
The unit is in the ‘AUTO’ mode in a ‘stand alone’ situation, i.e. without connection to an
ARC30X0.
In ‘AUTO’ mode, for example, the ‘A’ input will be routed to the outputs. In the event of
the upconverter on chain A reporting a failure, the ‘B’ input will be selected to the
outputs providing the B converter is functioning.

The top segments of the display on the front panel indicate which converter is
‘on-line’.
Following the protection switch can be two HPA’s, whose outputs are phase combined
by the CRPC.
In normal operation the HPA’s are ‘power combined’, however if one of the HPA’s
fails the CRPC is driven such that the full power from the available HPA is applied to
the antenna.
Manual selection of the routing is achieved from the front panel of the unit.
The available options are :
Up-converter A on-line
Up-converter B on-line
and if HPA switching available some or all of the following:
HPA A to Antenna
HPA B to Antenna
HPA A & B to Antenna
HPA A & B to Load
Having made a ‘manual’ selection the APS3100 will continue to operate ‘automatically’
as shown in the tables below.
For the Up-converters the following will apply:

NOTE : During HPA switching, inhibit relays are activated to mute the RF until new
path is in place.

2. SPECIFICATION
The APS3100 can monitor the status of up to two up-converters and HPA’s connected
to its front panel at the 19 way male Cannon connector labelled ‘PARALLEL’.
The number of up-converters in the system and the output power of the HPA’s are
software defined at manufacture.
The APS3100 can be powered from either of the 18V supplies from the up-converters
or from an external 12V supply.
The status signal from an up-converter or HPA, is to be a ground free contact closure.
The inhibit lines are ground free contacts. An open circuit does not inhibit the RF,
therefore if the APS fails the RF is not inhibited.
If a power detector is fitted in the system, the RF power is shown on the 3 digit front
panel display. If an ARC30X0 is connected, data relating to the applied power is
transferred between the units via the RS485 bus.
The APS3100 can also control and monitor a compact ratio power combiner, which
appears functionally as two waveguide switches.
However a CRPC may not be present, but replaced by waveguide switches. During
power up of the APS3100, the software is configured to cover one of the following :
1. Variable power combiner with integral waveguide switch (MODE 1).
2. A single waveguide switch (MODE 2).
3. No waveguide switch (MODE 3).
Placing links in the CRPC mating connector shell sets the mode of operation. By giving
a false tailback, this indicates to the software,at powerup only, that a particular switch
is missing.
The connection to the CRPC or waveguide switches appear at the connector labelled
‘CRPC Control’ (Early units may be labelled VPC), which is a 19 way male Cannon
connector.
