PROCEDURE FOR Docunrent No. MRrPr_/r,Pl'/4ss/18.
LIQUID PENETRANT Rev. No. 00
METMECH Pagc 3 of 5
1.0 SCOPE
This general procedure covers the procedure for liquid penetrant inspection of welds of
Piping Joints.
The Liquid Penetrant Inspection is to be conducted by solvent removable penetrant.
Liquid penetrant processes are non-destructive testing methods for detecting
discontinuities that are open to the surface. They are applicable to in proceis, final and
maintenance inspection. They can be effectively used in the inspection of nonporous.
metallic materials, both ferrous and non-ferrous, and of nonporous nonmetallic materials
such as ceramics, plastics and glass. Discontinuities open to the surface such as cracks.
seams, laps and cold shuts. Laminations, through leaks or lack of fusion are indicated by
these methods.
3.0 SURFACEPREPARATION
In general, satisfactory results are obtained when the surface of the part is in the as
welded, as rolled, as cast or as forged condition. Surface preparation by grinding.
machining, or other Methods may be necessary where surface irregularities could mask
indications of unacceptable discontinuities.
Prior to all liquid penetrant examination, the surface to be examined and all adjacent areas
within at least 1 inch shall be dry and free of all dirt, grease, lint scale, welding flux
spatter and other extraneous matter that could obscure surface openings or otherwise
interfere with the examination.
Typical cleaning agents, which may be used, are detergents, organic solvents, descaling
solutions and paint removers. Degreasing and ultrasonic cleaning methods may also be
used.
After cleaning, drying of the surfaces to be examined shall be accomplished by normal
evaporation or with forced hot air.

4.0 TECHNIQUE
After removal of any rust, scale, welding flux spatter etc., the surface to be inspected shall
be cleaned with a dry, lint free cloth. Subsequently with a lightly moistened cloth of cleancr
/ remover. The drying process shall be accomplished by normal evaporation.
After the required penetration dwell time, the penetrant renraining on the sr-rrfhcc shall bc
removed by wipes of .l.un, lint free cloth repeating the oper'l'hen lightly t:.roistctled cloth
solvent will be used to wipe until all the remaining traces olexcess penetrant is retrlovccl,
On removal of all excess penetrant drying shall be accomplished by normal evaporatioll.
Minimun-r time for drying shall be one minute,
4.4 DEVELOPERAPPLICATION
The non-aqueous wet developer will be sprayed directly to the surlace of the
part I'rotrl at.t
aerosol container. The non-aqueous developer evaporates rapidly at roorn tenlperatLlrc'
parts / areas shall be sprayed in a manner so as to have con-rplete coverage with a thin arlcl
even film of develoPer.
Developer dwell time shall not be less than seven minutes.
5.0 INSPECTION
propcr
Inspection of test surfaces will be performed after the development time to assurc
'l'o
bleld out of penetrant fiom discontinuities on to the developer coating. aid in
evaluation, thsobservation shall commence with the applicatior-r of developer.
post cleaning is necessary in cases where residual penetrant or developer could intcrl'crc
with subseqr"nt processing or service requirements. A suitable techniqr-re such as sirtlplc
water rinse/or solvent cleaning may be employed'
Client Iv[s.BPCL, MUMBAI.
The acceptance criteria shall be as per ASME Sec. VIII Div I Appendix 8 or any othcr
referencing code/ specification.
