THE IMPRESSIVE LIFE OF KEN BLOCK
by Mamatsis George
Motorsports world suffered a lot recently. The famous stunt driver Ken Block unfortunately
passed away, in a snowmobile accident at the age of 55. What a coincidence! Another mo-
torsports legend Michael Schumacher suffers from his ski accident 10 years now…..
Ken Block was an American professional rally driver known for his driving skills. Block was co
-owning and driving for Hoonigan Industries, an apparel brand for auto enthusiasts. He also had
several partnerships with car industries like Ford and Audi to promote the brands.
Rallying
In 2005, Block began his National rallying career with the Vermont SportsCar team driving
a Subaru WRX STi. At the end of his first rallying year, Ken Block had won the Rally Amer-
ica Rookie of the Year award.
In 2008 he finished second overall in the Rally America National championship with a strong
victory in the last event. In the Lake Superior Performance Rally (LSPR) stage, Block finished
over one minute ahead of his next closest competitor and secured the second overall position.
In 2009 Block was the lead tester of Ford for the 2010 Rally America season. He appeared in
TopGear show and filmed the hit YouTube video "Gymkhana 2".

In 2010, Block joined Ford to compete in the World Rally Championship for Monster World
Rally Team, where he drove a Ford Focus RS WRC. He became the first American driver to
campaign for WRC. His talent though, was not so much to keep up with the rules of the champi-
onship but rather offer entertainment. He therefore focused on filming videos featuring him
driving on famous routes or landmarks like the Gymkhana or the Hollywood ride. Block’s hit
was filming fast and risky driving sessions, making him the most popular of his kind with mil-
lions of views on YouTube, like the 3rd Gymkhana, that got more than seven million views in its
first week! Rest in Peace Ken!
