Comments on Chimney Design

(1) The self-suppor ng chimney is an important structure. Hence, the k1 factor for wind load
calcula on must be considered to be 1.08 instead of 1.
(2) As per the modal analysis carried out in STAAD, the fundamental period of the structure varies
from 0.62 Sec to 0.88 Sec, as per the simple and 3D models, respec vely (see below the STAAD
output). Therefore, as per IS 6533 (Part 2), Cl. 8.3.1, it exceeds 0.25 seconds. Hence, the design
wind loads shall take into considera on the dynamic effect due to pulsa on of thrust caused
by wind velocity in addi on to the sta c wind load calculated under 8.2.3.

(3) The sta c wind load shall be calculated as per Cl. 8.2.3, where Sta c wind pressure, q, ac ng
normal to the surface of the chimney shall be taken as specified in IS 875 (Part 3) (2015)
(4) The Dead load should also consider the self-weight of the liner.
(5) As per IS 6533 (Part 2), the following load calcula ons must be considered:

a) Dead load + wind load,

b) Dead load + earthquake load,
c) Dead load + load due to lining + imposed load on service pla orms + wind load, or
d) Dead load + load due to lining + imposed load on service pla orms + earthquake loads.
(6) Check the permissible stresses in the circular chimney as per Table 3 of IS 6533, Part 2
(7) The design of the base plate, connec ons, and liner must be provided
(8) Temperature stress check is not given
(9) Overall stability shall be following the Cl. 9 of IS 6533, Part 2.
