The World Health Organization
Who we are
Founded in 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) is the United
Nations agency that connects nations, partners, and people to promote
health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable – so everyone,
everywhere can attain the highest level of health.
What we do
The World Health Organization leads global efforts to expand
universal health coverage. We direct and coordinate the
world’s response to health emergencies. And we promote
healthier lives – from pregnancy care through old age.
Where we work
Working with 194 Member States across six regions and on the ground in 150+
locations, the WHO team works to improve everyone’s ability to enjoy good health and
well-being.
Funding
The World Health Organization gets its money from two main sources:
· “Assessed contributions” paid by Member States every year. They are a
percentage of a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
· “Voluntary contributions” from Member States and other partners.
Assessed Contributions cover less than 20% of the total budget. The rest of WHO’s
financing is in the form of “voluntary contributions”, from Member States as well as from
other United Nations organizations, intergovernmental organizations, philanthropic
foundations, the private sector, and other sources.
