INTRODUCTI
For this performance task, pupils will engage in a series of activities to explore how the presence or
absence of oxygen can lead to changes in matter and environment. In this task, pupils will also
explore how oxygen affects the environment and understand the cause and effect relationships
involved. They will also propose solutions to address related problems.

1. Prepare two freshly sliced apples.
2. Take one sliced apple and completely cover it with a transparent glass, while leaving the other piece
exposed to the air.
3. Leave them for 15 minutes and note the differences of appearance of the apples.
4. Light two candles, and then cover one candle with a transparent glass. Then observe what happens.

1. Gather three identical cups and iron nails for the experiment.
2. Fill each cup with a different liquid: cooking oil, vinegar, and water.
3. Submerge one iron nail into each cup, ensuring that they are fully immersed in the liquid.
4. Allow the nails to soak in their respective liquids for a duration of three days. (Nails should have
been immersed 3 days prior to the activity.)
5. After three days, carefully remove each nail from the cups.
6. Observe and note whether the nails have developed rust or not.
