Research Questions and Hypotheses

Investigators place signposts to carry the reader through a plan for a

study. The first signpost is the purpose statement, which establishes the
central intent for the study.
QUALITATIVE
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH QUESTIONS
In a qualitative study, inquirers state research questions, not
objectives (i.e., specific goals for the research) or hypotheses (i.e.,
predictions that involve variables and statistical tests). These
research questions assume two forms: (a) a central question and
(b) associated sub-questions.
Expect the research questions to evolve and change during the study in a
manner consistent with the assumptions of an emerging design.
Use open-ended questions.

Specify the participants and the research site for the study.

QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESES
Quantitative researchers pose research questions or hypotheses and objectives
to focus the study’s purpose.

What is a research What is a quantitative

question? objective?

What is a quantitative
hypotheses?
What is a research question?
These are the questions about the relationships among variables that the
investigator seeks to know.

What is a quantitative hypotheses?

-they are the predictions that the researcher makes about the expected
relationships among variables.

-predictions about the population values that the researcher will estimate
based on date from a sample.
What is a quantitative objective?
-Indicates the study’s goal
Writing Quantitative Research
questions and hypotheses.
Writing Quantitative Research questions and hypotheses
1- write questions or hypotheses, not both
2-consider 3 approaches to the variables for questions
or hypotheses:
-compare groups
-relate variables
-describe responses

IF WRITING HYPOTHESES, USE A CONSISTENT FORM:

-Null hypotheses (predict no difference or relationship)

-Alternative hypotheses or directional hypotheses (predict direction of

difference or relationship)

-Nondirectional hypotheses (predict a difference or relationship, but not its

direction)

IF WRITING RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

-first, specify descriptive questions for each important variable

-Next, state inferential questions that relate variables or compare groups.

-finally, add questions in which variables are controlled.

Descriptive and inferential
questions
Danniser Feliz Gomez
Descriptive and inferential questions
Descriptive questions are designed to gather information about a particular
topic or phenomenon.

On the other hand, inferential questions aim to draw conclusions or make

predictions based on the data collected they go beyond describing the data and
seek to uncover relationships, patterns, or differences within the dataset.
How do the students rate on critical thinking skills?

(A descriptive question focused on the

independent variable)
How does critical thinking ability and prior grades
influence students achievement?

( An inferential questions relating critical thinking

times grades and students achievement)
