 Ph meters can be small and handheld or large and stationary

 Parts of a (stationary) pH meter include: the meter, the arm, and the electrode
 The arm allows the electrode to move up and down into the beaker containing sample
 Ph meter should be calibrated using colour coded buffer solution example-ph4, ph7 and
ph10
 To use a Ph meter
o Remove the cap of electrode should be capped and immersed in solution to
prevent it from drying out
o Electrode should rinsed using distilled water
o Electrode should be calibrated using buffer solution of ph7
o Immerse the electrode in buffer solution and record the reading
o Rinse the electrode with distilled water
o Repeat the calibration using buffer of ph4
o Again rinse with distilled water
o Calibrate again with buffer of ph10
o Rinse electrode in distilled water
 To find the ph of unknown solution lower the arm of ph meter into the solution of unknown
solution
 The ph of solution recorded on the ph meter
 Once the reading is taken remove the sample and ranged electrode with distilled water
 Replace the electrode cap for storage.
 Precautions:
1- Be careful with acid and base materials and wear gloves when dealing with them.
2- Handle carefully during inter-or intra laboratory transport to prevent breakage.
3- A pH meter needs to be calibrated daily with the help of standard buffer solutions.

Maintenance :
1- Store sensors at ambient temperature
2- The electrode should always be stored in an appropriate solution( KCL solution)
3- If you have a problem, tell the authorized person.

Cleaning of the pH meter itself:

1- The outside case of the pH meter should be cleaned using detergent or disinfectant (e.g. 70%
ethanol) if required.

2- The area around the pH meter should be kept clean and any spills of samples or reagents
cleaned up immediately.

3 - Any build up of salts on the top of the electrode near the filling well (if applicable) should be
cleaned using water.
4 - All wires and contacts should be cleaned to avoid corrosion

5 - After the cleaning stage, rinse the electrode in distilled water and replace the internal filling
solution (KCl) if appropriate.

Monitor the temperature daily as per following procedure. 5.2.5 Temperature shall be recorded
which is displayed on LCD of the controller of the incubator. 5.2.6 Observe the temperature shown
on the digital display. The temperature should not differ by + 2 °C.
