Mitä?
Sashka muisti katuen, miten hän monasti oli ollut tyytymätön, kun
kotona oli puutteellista, ahdasta ja ikävää; kun pikkusiskot sairastivat
ja itkivät — ja isä vielä joi. Kaksi kertaa oli isä ajanut kaikki ulos
kapakasta tullessaan — ja Sashka oli pitkän aikaa tuntenut
katkeruutta ja vihaa isää kohtaan…
Kyllä hän nyt oli katunut, oppinut ymmärtämään kodin arvoa! Nyt
hän muisti senkin, miten katkerasti isä oli itkenyt äitiä lyötyään: miten
hän päihtyneenäkin oli usein ollut synkkä ja surullinen. Hän alkoi
ymmärtää, ettei isäkään tahallaan juonut…
Tuo ilta tuntui ihanalta unelta, niin kaukaiselta kuin ei sitä olisi
ollutkaan… Ja kun Sashka taas muisti, että siitä on vain viisi viikkoa,
tunsi hän oudon epätoivon sielussaan; se onkin epätodellinen
unelma tulevaisuuteen nähden: hän ei koskaan pääse kotiin, ei enää
milloinkaan näe äitiä — hän katoaa kuin lakastunut lehti
syysmyrskyyn…
— Äiti…
— Tiikeri…
— No, etkö kuullut mitä sanoin? Vai tiikereitä… Kyllä minä ajan
tiikerit nahastasi…
— Nyt lähdetään!
— Vai niin, vai niin, käykää toimeen — kuului taas tuo tunteeton
ääni, ja päävartija astui jo muutaman askeleen seinällä riippuvia
ruoskia kohden. Mutta samassa päällikkö viittasi odottamaan, lisäsi
entistä hitaammin.
Ilkeältä ivalta kuului Kristuksen nimi, sillä sitä säesti rätisevä ääni
kun Sashkan paita takaapäin repäistiin yltä kahtena kappaleena.
— Sata!

— Hyvä! hyvä!
— Oikein puhuttu?
— Selitä!
— Selitä…
Pitkä, kalpeakasvoinen mies, jonka sysimusta tukka oli ohimoilla
muuttunut sinisen harmaaksi, koputti pitkällä sormellaan pöytää.
Hänen mustat, kuopalla olevat silmänsä hehkuivat ja kolean
hillityssä äänessä kuvastui katkeruus ja harmi:
— Pistooli pois!
Maksim sanoi sen hiljaa, tuskin kuuluvasti, multa kun hän samalla
kohdisti pistävän katseensa nuorukaiseen, totteli tämä aivankuin
hypnotisoituna.
— En!
