Projectile Motion Problems: Launched Horizontally

1) A stone is thrown horizontally at 15 m/s from the top of a cliff 44 m high. How
long does the stone take to reach the bottom of the cliff? How far from the base
of the cliff does the stone strike the ground? (Ans: 3 sec; 45 m)

2) A steel ball rolls with a constant velocity across a tabletop 0.95 m high. It rolls
off and hits the ground 0.352 m horizontally from the edge of the table. How fast
was the ball rolling? (Ans: 0.8 m/s)

3) A car, moving too fast on a horizontal stretch of a mountain road, slides off the
road, falling into deep snow 43.9 m below the road and 87.7 m beyond the edge
of the road. How long did the car take to fall? How fast was it going when it left
the road. What was its acceleration 10 m below the edge of the road? (Ans: 3 sec;
29.2 m/s)

4) A stone is thrown horizontally at a speed of 5 m/s from the top of a cliff 78.4 m
high. How long does it take for the stone to reach the bottom of the cliff? How far
from the base of the cliff does the stone strike the ground? What are the
horizontal and vertical components of the velocity as the stone strikes the
ground? (Ans: 4 sec; 20 m; 5 m/s; 39.24 m/s)

5) Lucy and her friend are working at an assembly plant making wooden toy
giraffes. At the end of the line, the giraffes go horizontally off the edge of the
conveyor belt and fall into a box below. If the box is 0.6 m below the level of the
conveyor belt and 0.4 m away from it, what must be the horizontal velocity of the
giraffes as they leave the conveyor belt? (Ans: 1.14 m/s)

6) You are visiting a friend from elementary school who now lives in a small town.
One local amusement is the ice-cream parlor, where Stan, the short-order cook,
slides his completed ice-cream sundaes down the counter at a constant speed of
2 m/s to the servers. The counter is kept very well polished for this purpose. If the
servers catch the sundaes 7.0 cm from the edge of the counter, how far do they
fall from the edge of the counter to the point at which the server catches them?
(Ans: 0.006 m)
