Assignment Qs

1. A storage tank in a refrigeration system has a volume of 0.006 m3 and contains

a two-phase liquid–vapor mixture of Refrigerant 134a at 180 kPa. Plot the total
mass of refrigerant, in kg, contained in the tank and the corresponding fractions
of the total volume occupied by saturated liquid and saturated vapor,
respectively, as functions of quality.

2. A compressor operates with Ammonia as the working fluid (0.5m3/min).

Ammonia undergoes a process for which the pressure-volume relation is
pvn=constant. During compression, ammonia changes state from 2bar, 10oC to
10bar, 60oC. Heat transfer from the compressor occurs at the rate of 5kJ/kg of
ammonia flowing. Evaluate a. the constant n for the process, b. power required.
Show the process on T-v diagram.

3. Steam at 14 MPa, 600oC enters a turbine through a duct with a diameter of 0.2
m at 100 m/s. The steam exits the turbine at 500 kPa, 180oC through a duct of
diameter 0.8 m. Determine 1. Velocity of steam at the exit, 2. The mass flow
rate of the steam in kg/hr.

Part B: If turbine is losing 50kJ /s of energy, obtain its power output. Comment
on entropy generation. Draw the process on T-v and T-s diagram.

4. A pump steadily delivers water at 0.08 m3/s, through a pipe of diameter 20 cm,
located 90 m above the inlet pipe of 15 cm. The pressure at inlet and exit is
nearly equal to 1 bar and temperature throughout is 20oC. Determine the power
required in kW.

5. An open feed water heater operates at steady state with liquid water entering at
50oC, 1 MPa. A separate stream of water enters at 1 MPa with m2dot/m1dot =
0.22. A single stream of saturated water exits at 1 Mpa. Determine temperature
and state of stream 2. Show all three states on T-v diagram.

6. Refrigerant 12 enters the expansion valve of a refrigeration system with at 14

bar and 48oC and expands to 4 bar, with no changes in KE and PE. Determine
the quality at the exit of the valve. Draw the process on p-v and T-v diagram.
Also obtain entropy generation.

7. A vapor power plant generates electricity at a rate of 1.5 GW. The average
temperature of the steam through the boiler is 650K and that of the cooling water
passing through the condenser is 300K. Determine the minimum theoretical rate
at which energy must be transferred to the cooling water, in GW. What are
consequences of transferring this energy to the surroundings?

8. A heat pump driven by a 1 kW electric motor provides heating for a building

whose interior is to be kept 20oC. On a day when the outside temperature is 0oC
and 65000 kJ/hr energy is lost through the walls and the roofs, would the heat
pump suffice? Draw neat schematic.

9. One kg of saturated liquid water at 160oC expands to a final pressure of 1.5 bar
in an isothermal internally reversible process. Determine the work and heat
transfer during the process. Sketch the process on T-s and p-v diagram. Show
on the diagram, work and heat transfer.

10. A piston-cylinder assembly initially contains 0.2 m3 of steam at 330oC, 20 bar.

The steam expands adiabatically to 2 bar. Determine the maximum theoretical
work that can be developed by the steam.
