Lesson Idea Name: How I Explored North America


Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed: SS3H2 Describe the reasons for and obstacles to the
exploration of North America.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and

Lesson idea implementation:


Students will use PowerPoint to create a story about exploring North America. They can make

the story using first person or third person. This activity will be introduced by showing them a
story the teacher made on PowerPoint. The story made by the teacher will show them how it
should be made as well as their goal for this lesson. Students will start by making a
storyboard, then they will show it to the teacher. The teacher will provide them with
feedback and once they get the okay, they will start making the PowerPoint. At the end of
the lesson, students will be able to present their story to the whole class.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
Before starting the lesson, the teacher will give students a quick lesson on how to use
PowerPoint. As well as what is expected of them while working on PowerPoint. Students will
first need to create a storyboard that will have to be approved by the teacher prior to getting
on the computer. Students will be allowed to help each other while working on PowerPoint if
needed.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):


This activity enhances the learning experience for all students because it allows them to
express their knowledge creatively. They can use their knowledge of the exploration of North
America to create their own story and share it will the class. This activity follows the UDL
principle of action and expression. With this activity, students can use what they have
learned to create a story of the exploration of North America. At the same time, they learn
how to use a new tool that will be useful in the future. At the end of the activity, they are
able to share what they have created with their classmates.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:


The lesson will help students have a better understanding of the reasons for and the
difficulties that came with exploring North America. I look forward to implementing the use
of PowerPoint with the students. I look forward to this because it can be a tool that they can
use throughout their school years and at their future jobs.
