Description Activity
Sr.No. Check Points Yes/No/NA Score (1-10)
1 Storage place must be easily accessible and not to be in confined area.
2 Storage place must have separate entry and exit point.
3 Storage room shed must be fire resistant.
4 Flammable & Toxic gas cylinders must have separate storage.
5
The cylinder must not be stored under moist condition, which may cause corrosion in cylinders.
Storage areas shall be kept clear of dry vegetation and combustible materials for a minimum
6
distance of 4.6m (15 ft).
7 Full and empty cylinders should be stored separately and the area are properly identified.

8 Gas Cylinder Storage area shall be secured against unauthorized entry interference/ tampering.

The storage area should have adequate lighting to assist in the identification of the cylinder
9
contents.
Uses of protected electrical equipments in storage room where flammable compressed gasses are
10
stored.
11 Compressed gases must be handled and used only by trained persons.
Are cylinders stored in upright positions and immobilized by chains or other means to prevent
12
them from falling?
Are all compressed gas cylinders subjected to periodic hydrostatic testing and interior inspection
13
by suppliers?
Are all compressed gas cylinders regularly inspected for corrosion, pitting, cuts, gouges, digs,
14
bulges, neck defects and general distortion?
Gas cylinders storage area shall be clearly identified by appropriate warning signages to
15
communicate the hazards of the gases and prohibited practices.
Storage areas shall have a minimum of 25 percent of the perimeter open to the atmosphere to
16
prevent accumulation of inflammable gases.
Compressed Gases cylinder Stores shall be located away from any source of excessive heat or
17 ignition and other storages of combustible material and process plants having potentila fire
explosion hazard.

All cylinders shall be shielded from direct sunlight, or other heat, to avoid the build-up of excess
18
internal pressure which might lead to gas leakage or, in extreme cases, bursting of the cylinder.

The floor should be essentially level and constructed of concrete or noncombustible, nonporous
19
material. The floor should be laid to a slope to prevent the accumulation of water.

Gas cylinders in a storage area shall be separated from each other in accordance with their hazard
20
category. A minimum separation distance should be provided.

SL.NO. CHECKS Yes /No/NA Score Severity(1-5) Remarks

1 User has to ensure shop floor activities as per SOPs, JSA & SWI.

Gas Cylinders shall be handled only by properly trained &

2 experienced persons.

While handling cylinders, the cylinder should not be dragged or

3 rolled.

4 Do not use a cylinder unless contents are clearly identified.

5 Do not use a Magnets for lifting a cylinder.
Do not Lower or Lift the cylinders, manually. The activity should be
done by mechanized means (using winch, telfer, crane, Gas cylinder
6 Grabber etc.) with proper cage for holding the cylinders.

Where appropriate lifting attachments have not been provided on

the cylinder/containers, suitable cradle/cage to be used for the
7 activities

Do not use Leaking, defective, fire burned and corroded cylinders.

8

9 Do not use any chain or slings for lifting cylinders.

Cylinders shall be used only in vertical position and shall be secured
10 that they cannot roll or fall.

Working places shall not be classified as storage places for the

11 purpose of licensing.
Gas cylinder parts must not be modified, tampered with,
12 obstructed, removed, repaired, or painted.
Appropriate personal protective equipment, including footwear,
helmet, hand gloves etc must be worn when handling compressed
13 gas cylinders- this includes transportation, installation and use of
these cylinders.

Only the appropriate double stage double acting regulator as per IS

14 6901 should be used for Oxy-Acetylene combined use.

Only appropriate torch of IS 7653 should be used for Oxy-Acetylene

15 combined use.
No lubricant (Oil or Grease) should be used to connect the regulator
16 to the cylinder.
A flash back arrestor should always be used to prevent back
siphoning of chemicals when a very soluble gas is being employed
17

Oil or grease shall not come in contact with the cylinder valve
18 assembly or the regulator fittings.
Use red hose for acetylene and other fuel gases and black / green
19 hose for oxygen. Never interchange hoses.
All the persons, engaged in gas cylinder handling & its use need to
20 undergo proper training for the task assigned.
Any cylinder found with any anomaly to be sent back to the stores
21 duly tagged indicating “Defective” for onward return to supplier

Cutting Nozzle tips shall be always kept clean to prevent back fire.
22
Use hoses of equal length and do not coil the hoses around
23 regulator or cylinder

Always keep valves in “Closed” status when cylinders are not in use.
24

Relief valves should be vented to prevent potential buildup of

25 explosive or toxic gases.
Never allow flames or concentrated heat sources to come in contact
26 with a gas cylinder.

Never allow a gas cylinder to become part of an electrical circuit.
