OUTCOME 3 – WRITTEN ANALYSIS OF A WORK BEING PREPARED FOR PERFORMANCE:

KEY SKILLS

● describe the treatment of elements of music, compositional devices and concepts in selected works, and their
intended effect
● respond to selected music excerpts by identifying and describing relevant musical characteristics
● create critical responses that justify effect via music examples

Task Details:

Students are to complete a detailed analysis of a work being prepared for performance (solo or group)
In your analysis you are to cover topics including:

Theoretical Knowledge – eg time signature, key area, harmonic progressions, melodic contours, dynamics,
Background information – eg stylistic features of the work, composer information and/or information regarding different
recordings by various artists.
Structural information – eg – Form, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, solo sections and elements from various instruments and
performers
Instrumentaion – eg – the role of the drummer in the piece, the effect of the backing vocalists, the use of a particular
percussion or orchestral instrument(s)

These MUST be related back to the topic for Unit 2 – Effect in Music:

From the Study Design:

“In this unit, students focus on the way music can be used to create an intended effect. By performing, analysing and
responding to music works/examples that create different effects, students explore and develop their understanding of
the possibilities of how effect can be created. Through creating their own music, they reflect this exploration and
understanding.

As they analyse and respond to a wide range of music, they become familiar with the ways music creators treat
elements and concepts of music and use compositional devices to create works that communicate their ideas. They
continue to develop their understanding of common musical language concepts by identifying, recreating and notating
these concepts.”

Analysis should include:

 At least 500 Words outlining the work discussing the elements above
 At least TWO or more excerpts of the work (eg a chord progression diagram, melodic excerpt, riffs, drum
beats, lyrics)
 A discussion of the EFFECT that elements have on the original recorded work, a cover/live version or student
interpretation of the work.
 Any links or references as appropriate (in the form of a Bibliography or citations)
