Benefits of Power over Ethernet
WiFi AP

• Single cable for power and data - transmits safe and reliable
Ethernet
PoE switch power over twisted pair cabling

• Lower cost - There is no need for an AC outlet at the location

of powered devices

• Centralized Power - powering the endpoints via a PoE switch

VoIP allows for centralized power where the PoE switch can be
CP
Phone plugged into a UPS
WA Outlet
• IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards continue to evolve to support
higher PoE levels

PoE over structured cabling – heat dissipation James Prescott Joule

• Heat generated in cabling = Current 2 x Resistance

• For a constant current, the predicted temperature rise for a cable bundle will increase with the
number of cables in the bundle

• Increased temperature of installed cables will increase channel attenuation/insertion loss

• Increased temperature of installed cables may exceed the specified operating temperature

PoE over structured cabling – de-mating under PoE load
• Possible damage to connecting hardware contacts where mating and de-
mating occurs while the power supply current is flowing

NOTE: CommScope outlets are designed and tested to eliminate risk of damage
from de-mating under load

Cabling standards guidelines for remote powering James Prescott Joule

• When planning for new cabling – bundle sizes should not exceed 24 cables

• Assessment of existing installations must be made to determine support of

802.3bt type 4 power levels
o Track cable bundle size
o Location of a cable bundle
o Cable gauge/DC Resistance
o Bundle report – list of cables, power levels, totals
o PSE – PoE delivery type
o PSE – Maximum PoE delivery level

• At all locations where de-mating under load presents a risk of technical damage
or contractual liability then appropriate warning labeling shall be applied in close
proximity (ISO/IEC 14763-2)

Summary

41 PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL © 2017 CommScope, Inc

Summary
• Number and types of PoE devices is growing rapidly

• The upcoming IEEE 802.3bt standard will support up to 90W of power

• Cabling standards define guidelines for proper design, installation and operation of
cabling infrastructure that is delivering PoE

• System Manager v7.4 incorporates support for many of these guidelines

• The SYSTIMAX imVision® Automated Infrastructure Management solution is a unique

tool for planning, assessment and monitoring of PoE services over structured cabling
