Resistance and Length of a wire

Aim: To investigate how the length of a piece of wire affects its resistance.

Equipment required :
1. 1 metre of nichrome wire (28SWG) fixed to a metre rule with tape
2. Variable voltage DC power supply / 1.5 V Dry Cell
3. DC ammeter (0 - 1A)
4. DC voltmeter (0 - 6V)
5. Two crocodile clips and 5 leads.
6.
Circuit Diagram

Procedure

1. Place the clips for the voltmeter at 20 cm apart on the wire.

2. Close the switch and read and record the current from the ammeter.
3. Read and record the potential difference on the voltmeter.
4. Use the equation V=IR to calculate the resistance of this length of wire.
5. Repeat steps 1 to 3 increasing the distance between the clips by an interval of
20cm a further 4 times.
6. Plot a scatter graph with the length of wire on the x-axis and the resistance on
the y-axis. The gradient of line of best fit will show the relationship between
the length of the wire and its resistance.
