Speedball sketching pen set review
Introduction:
Welcome back fellow art lovers!
Today's review features the speedball sketching pen set.
To avoid smudges, you should work from the top left of the page and work you way
down if you are right handed.
For left handed people, you should work from the top right of the page and work
your way down.
Before buying the Speedball sketching pen set, you will need to think about:
- The price
- The size of the nibs
- If the shape/design of the nib is right for you (the size & design of the nibs
can have different results when used)
Speedball state that the product is ideal for lettering cards, invitations,
announcements, or journaling.
They also state that the product is great for different techniques and is excellent
for drawing, sketching, lithography, and crosshatching.
3-5 pros:
- Includes six different nib sizes
- Includes informative tips & tricks page
-
3-5 cons:
- Difficult to draw smooth circles with No. 102, No. 107, & No. 108
- Nibs need to be cleaned fairly quickly or else ink sets on them (tough to remove
ink when set)
- The small pen holder holds nibs a bit too tight (have to be careful when taking
them out)
Nibs:
In this set, there are six different sized nibs to use which can flex to give you
varying widths.
Three of them (No. 102, No. 107, No. 108) are designed to be used with the small
pen holder, and the other three (No. 99, No. 56, No. 512) are designed for the
large pen holder.
You can see below how much they can flex; although, some flex more than others.
This is a great feature to have as it gives you the ability to vary the width of
the strokes when using them.

Also, each nib can create different results when using them due to their design.
I love that there are six different nibs in this set that can produce different
results for different needs.

Pen holders:
As mentioned before, the Speedball sketching pen set includes two pen holders.
The small pen holder is a bit different, it doesn't have the same groove like the
large pen holder.
However, it doesn't seem to feel awkward when holding it. You're also not having to
do large strokes with the finer nibs unlike the large pen holder.

Informational page:
Lastly, the Speedball sketching pen set includes an informational tips & tricks
page.
The page is filled with insightful information to help you get better at different
things like calligraphy.
It also shows different techniques that you can do with the nibs like cross-
hatching.

I absorlutely love how fine the lines I can get with these nibs.
For example, the symbols on the sword, I was so supprised I could write that small.
Adding water to the ink, I was able to create different shades to colour the
character in using a small brush.
It's so great to be able to vary the tone of just the black ink let alone other
colours that you can get.
Social Proof:
Looking at reviews online for the Speedball sketching pen set, the majority of
reviews were positive while a few were slightly negative.
Alternatives:
Listed below are a few alternatives to the Speedball sketching pen set if this
mixed media sketchbook doesn't take your fancy:
The ink set is aimed towards comic drawing, but could be used for any type of
drawing or even calligraphy.
Yosoo state that the pen holder is made from high quality pastic material that is
durable, sturdy, and comfortable to hold.
The nibs are also made of stainless steel which is anti-corrosive and not easily
bent.
At US$8 (AU$) (at time of publication), it is a great and inexpensive ink set to
have for a beginner.
ESSSHOP state that it is used for writing and calligraphy, but could also be used
for drawing; although, you wouldn't have different thicknesses.
As well as its beautiful visual appearance, the dip pen can easily be washed clean
due to its glass design.
Manuscript states that the dip pens, "allow you to create beautiful writing and
decrative designs."
The set can also be used for drawing and for US$15.22 (AU$) (at time of
publication), it is great for beginners or even intermediate artists.
Final thoughts:
I really enjoyed using the Speedball sketching pen set along side Dr. Ph. Martin's
Bombay India Ink.
I loved how thick and thin the lines could be which can create variety and contrast
in your drawings.
Ink is an amazing medium to use and with it, you can create stunning artwork even
if just using one colour.
The Speedball sketching pen set only cost US$ (AU$) (at time of publication) and I
feel like it is an art supply that is great for beginner and intermediate ink
enthusiests.
