MATH 29- M2- Lesson 2 Application

Samples for Digital Learning Resources:

1. Digital Compass

Use the Constructions App in the Math Tool Kit to create one or more of these
figures: ggbm.at/C9acgzUx

You will just click that link to open the Application that can use in constructing regular
polygons.

 an equilateral triangle
 a regular hexagon
 a square
2. Geometry Software ( Geogebra)
This digital tool can be used in constructing triangles, squares, rectangles,
and regular hexagons. When using dynamic geometry software such
as Geogebra, you can make shapes that look like a particular shape. In order
to create a true specific shape, the shape needs to be constructed to have the
properties of that particular shape. When points are moved, these properties
will be maintained and so the shape will remain the desired shape.

Let's do a few problems using Geogebra.

1. Use Geogebra to construct an equilateral triangle that stays an equilateral triangle

even if you move its points.
Start by making a segment between two points.

[Figure3]
Now you must find the correct location for point . Make two circles, one centered at
point and one centered at point , with a radius the length of ¯.

[Figure4]
The circles intersect at two points. Either of them will work for point . Connect to
form an equilateral triangle.

[Figure5]
Verify that your construction stays an equilateral triangle even if you move any of the
points in the image.
[Figure6]
Note that at this point you could select the circles and hide them (right click and de-
select “show object”) in order to just see the equilateral triangle.

Samples for Non-Digital Learning Resources:

1. Compass. This is a very useful material that can help in constructing

triangles, squares, rectangles, and regular polygons.
- A device that allows you to create a circle with a given radius.
Not only can compasses help you to create circles, but also they
can help you to copy distances.
-
- Use a compass and straightedge to construct an equilateral
triangle.
Consider ¯ as one side of what will become equilateral triangle Δ. You
need to put point in the correct place in order to make the equilateral triangle.
The distance of point from point or point needs to be the same as the
distance between point and point .
Draw a line segment , using a straightedge. Use a compass to measure the
length of ¯.
2. Paper. It can be use as a material in constructing shapes.

 Paper: When a geometric figure is on a piece of paper, the paper itself can be
folded in order to construct new lines.
