The Importance of Sustainability Energy, Decarbonization & Zero Waste

Management

Ecological sustainability has been a constant challenge for emerging companies

keen on building ethical and environmentally committed business practices,
particularly in countries with abundant energy sources and massive productions that
involve not only consumable goods but more importantly energy consumption. As
these energy sources are neither replenishable nor easily removed (Routledge,
2022; Deloitte, 2022; EPA, year unknown), it is imperative to take into account the
issues of sustainable energy, decarbonization, and zero waste management in the
planning and evaluation of rising companies, particularly in an emerging economy
such as Indonesia.

The emergence of recent studies towards how large companies around the glove
such as Nestle, Danone and Mondelez, according to a report in 2020 by S&P Global
Market Intelligence, saw a sharp rise in cost of environmental and ecological
damages, leading to extensive losses in financial gains - all due to mass production
of plastic packaging and fossil fuel use in production and goods distribution. This
significance of waste management issues is further supported by a research by The
Guardian which stated that only 100 companies around the world are responsible for
71% of global emissions, a result of how companies employ fossil energies in their
production process which led to more carbon and corporate waste to be dumped in
landfills, lakes, rivers and/or oceans across the country.

It is a fact universally acknowledged that shifting one’s business into a “greener”

option is not as easy as it seems. Business Case Studies in 2021 listed down
challenges a company needs to solve to pivot into a greener business practice which
includes lack of capital allocations that could support green initiatives, poor
collaborative efforts between sustainability and financial teams, lack of metrics that
account for the levels of environmental sustainability, as well as lack of
comprehension and, subsequently, integrative strategies.

In lieu of the current global and local energy emission and waste management
challenges, Plug and Play has played a fundamental role in catalysing start-ups and
corporations alike, has been an avid supporter of utilizing a environmentally friendlier
business practices. This is performed by connecting companies with start-ups keen
on building environmentally sustainable business practices, and to develop and
nurture collaborations that could contribute to a more eco-friendly business climate.

One recent case of tackling the aforementioned challenges was an initiative fostered
in Porsche through a collaboration with a start-up funded by Plug and Play, BASF
and Motherson. In order to create the whole picture of a car part’s carbon footprint,
the involvement of evert player in a car’s value chain is inevitable, which is why the
three players teamed up for this challenge. BASF, Motherson and Porsche’s
Environment & Product Sustainability department made the connection during a Plug
and Play networking event and together they picked up conversations with
Autobahn’s start-up Circular Tree.

Features and events from Plug and Play are pivotal in bridging the needs and wants
of a company towards an end they wish to achieve. As a global innovation platform,
Plug and Play also invests, supports, and nurtures star-tups and companies to shift
towards more eco-friendly and ethical business practices, enabling companies to
contribute to the community and its proximity, as well as committing to a more
sustainable future for stakeholders and consumers.

According to an article by Maryville university, being a more environmentally sustain

company benefits a company in a number of ways, such as:

 Reduces Business Costs

 Improves Business Reputation
 Provides Competitive Advantages
 Increases Bottom Line

In conclusion, Plug and play as a catalyst for businesses, creates a bridge between
companies and businesses that ensures that their practives support and are aligned
with zero-waste and sustainable models as means towards growth as well as
business impact
