Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in HEALTH 6

I. Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
A. determine the different classification of wastes;
B. advocate proper waste management; and
C. categorize the wastes according to its classification.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Proper Waste Management
B. References: Budget of works for the Most Essential Learning
Competencies (Quarter 2, Week 8), Health Quarter 2, Module 4
C. Material: Picture, Chart, Powerpoint Presentation, Laptop, Projector, real
wastes, trash bins, colored papers, marker
D. Value Focus: Cleanliness

III. Procedure:
A. Review:
Let the pupils state the different ways to build and keep school and
community environment healthy
Ask: What are the different ways to build and keep school and community
environment healthy?
B. Motivation:
Make the pupils agree or disagree with the statements. If they agree they
will say “Gusto ko yan!”, if disagree, say “Ayaw, ayaw!”
a. Dispose dead animals in the canal or other bodies of water.
b. Burn plastic packaging to manage waste problems.
c. Segregate biodegradable, non-biodegradable and hazardous waste at
home.
d. Pick garbage that are scattering in the community and dispose in proper
trash bins.
e. Support the Clean and Green Programs of the community to maintain
cleanliness of the place.

C. Presentation:
Waste are found in our home, school and community. These wastes are
classified as biodegradable, non-biodegradable and hazardous. Wastes found
in school, in the community and at home should be managed properly to
reduce wastes, to prevent diseases or illnesses and to maintain a healthy
environment.
Biodegradable – can be converted into a fertilizer through composting (e.g. fruit
peelings, vegetables, leaves, meats, bones, or spoiled foods)
Non-biodegradable – packaging that can be reuse (e.g. plastic bags, plastic
bottles, can, glasses, metal scraps)
Hazardous – must be sealed in a container and dispose properly by burying in
specially built landfills or pit. (e.g. batteries, insecticide spray, spray bottles, paint,
bulbs, gasoline, thinner. Varnish. Fertilizers)
D. Application:
Present the poem entitled “Color-coded Bins” by Francilet R. Padios
Here is a green bin, biodegradable waste…you pitch in!
Next bin is yellow, non-biodegradable waste…off you throw!
Third bin is blue, hazardous waste…you put there too!
Throw it in... always put the waste in the proper bin!

Ask the learners with the questions below and let them answer. As they
answer they will pick a trash and place it into the proper trash bin.
a. According to the poem, where should you pitch in your biodegradable
waste?
b. What color of the bin should a hazardous waste be placed?
c. The wastes are non-biodegradable. Where should you throw your waste?
d. What colors are used for coding the biodegradable, non-biodegradable,
and hazardous wastes?

E. Generalization:
1. What are the 3 classification of wastes?
Biodegradable – can be converted into a fertilizer through composting
Non-biodegradable – packaging that can be reuse
Hazardous – must be sealed in a container and dispose properly by burying in
specially built landfills or pit.

2. Why do we have to properly manage our wastes?

F. Group Activity:
The teacher will group the learners into three (3) groups. Every group will
create their own “Catchy Waste Management Slogan or Quotes”. They
will write it on a piece of colored paper. After writing every group will then
explain the deeper meaning of their created slogan or quote.
(Example: “Recycle it All, No Matter How Small”, this means that even the
smallest candy wrapper must be recycled into a pillow to minimize waste
anywhere.)

IV. Evaluation
Complete the chart by categorizing every waste in the box to its proper
classification.
Biodegradable Non-biodegradable Hazardous candy wrapper leaves
plastic bottle paper
can plastic bag
bulb metal
fish bones varnish
mango peelings paint
glasses vegetables
syringe
V. Assignment
Look for any non-biodegradable waste that can be found at home which
you think you can use for recycling. (like can, plastic bottle or straw)
Think of something that you can do with it and create your DIY or Do It
Your Own Recycled Project.
Submit your project on the 2nd Friday of the month.
