Week 6 – CW in class
Work on your Coursework.
Deadline 13:00
Geotechnical Analysis
9:10 to 10:00 am
• Improve the geometry and the mesh (research in literature or improve the model).
• Improve the model by using more realistic elastic parameters (E and ν).
• Define a Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for your model (theoretically or practically).
• Make a detailed analysis of the results provided or your results (tensile stresses)
• Find a stress tensor in the soil under the tower, where the stresses are relatively
high.
• Decompose the stress tensor in the spheric and deviatoric components
• Calculate the invariants of the stress tensor and find the principal stresses.
Deadline 13:00
Sustainability
10:10 to 11:00 am
• Define the problem of sustainability in the context of the Tower of Pisa
by using the three pillars of sustainability.
• Focus only on one problem to give specific details about it
• Link sustainability with the Geotechnical Analysis and the global problem
of Climate Change.
• Answer this question: how does the geotechnical analysis you do in this CW
contribute to sustainability and climate change?
• Is the tower producing a carbon footprint?
Deadline 13:00
Conclusion
11:10 to 12:00 am
• Conclude linking your two sections: geotechnical analysis and
sustainability.
• Your conclusions must be linked to the aim and objectives of your work.
• Conclusion has the same weight on your marks as the other sections,
so, it must be well written and have significance.
Deadline 13:00
Introduction
12:10 to 12:40 am
• Aim must be only one sentence.
• You must have around five objectives to achieve your aim.
• References from scientific journal papers rather than web pages
(Harvard style).
• References include figures you use from any source.
• Remember you have support from the Skills for Learning Team.
