Techniques of Persuasion

Have your students become critical media observers


with these techniques of persuasion in advertising. This
resource has a one page breakdown as well as individual
techniques for display purposes. Use these posters as
a way to sort a variety of advertisements found in
magazines, newspapers or online. After sorting them,
look for differences and similarities in each technique.

Techniques of Persuasion
Bandwagon Beauty Bribery
-“Everybody has one!”; -Shows beautiful images; -bribing the consumer
persuading you to get the beautiful clothing with a giveaway; think
same product because “toy” in the cereal box
everybody has it

Cartoon Celebrity Evidence


-people or animals in -famous people (for -proven facts that
animation or drawings example, musician, movie something works or
star or athlete) testimonials from people

Expertise Family Fear


-research or expert in -family such as brothers, -stating what could
the field stating that a sisters, parents or even happen if you don’t use
product works; someone grandparents or buy the product
who is knowledgeable (usually a negative
about the product outcome of not using a
certain product)

Friends Fun Humor


-a group of friends at any -having a good time; doing -funny images; makes
