I. Answer the questions:
a) Why can adjusting to a new culture be so painful?
I assume that it’s a hard process at all. And not every individual is ready for
solving some problems, dealing with difficulties, understanding other culture’s habits,
customs and so on. In addition, the reason of moving isn’t always based on person’s
desire, but on some circumstances. So it’s not easy to relax and start doing something.
b) What stages of adjustment process can you define?
The first stage is so-called honeymoon. When everything seems to be normal,
amazing and so on.
The second one is cultural shock. People don’t understand what are they doing,
they experience problems.
The next is initial adaptation. Individuals start living, expressing themselves,
doing business.
The fourth stage is mental isolation. People are far from their families, friends,
they don’t get enough support. Sometimes they can even feel depressed.
And the last stage is acceptance and integration. Individuals feel comfortable
with food, people, traditions and life. So they are ready for everything.
c) In your opinion, how assimilation and acculturation differ?
Assimilation requires a complete rejection of one's native culture, acculturation
doesn’t. You just need to get acculturated to your host country/culture, not giving up
native.
d) In your opinion, how can mass media impact on people’s cultural perception
be controlled?
People need to bear in mind that not everything that is shown in mass media is
true. They should filter and control everything they hear or read. It’s the only way, I
think.
II. Task:
Describe in writing your ideas about the possible easing of culture shock effects.
I don’t think that is possible to find any ideas which can help everyone to ease
their culture shock effect. So maybe we need to prepare ourselves by reading some
current information about that place, talking to locals, visiting some interesting
places, go sightseeing and so on. It’ll help to get into the new culture quickly and feel
comfortable with it. But it depends on individual’s perception of situations, so if the
person decided to suffer he\she will do that and nothing, no one will be able to help. If
you know what you are doing and what for, you’ll get through anything, overcome
any difficulties, and nothing will change your decision.
