(1) INTRODUCTION

Sustainable management of surface water resources is integral in addressing the escalating

demand for clean water. Globally, hundreds of millions of people still drink untreated surface
water due to the lack of even a basic drinking water service and urgently need economical
off-grid water treatment devices (Tanvir, R.U., Sujon, S.A., & Yi, Pl., 2021). In this context,
natural materials are gaining attention for their potential use in water filtration.

Meanwhile, Coconut husk is a widely available and abundant natural material. Activated carbon
prepared from coconut husk was used for the removal of phenols from water (Manju, G.N., Raji,
C., & Anirudhan, T.S., 1998). Its fibrous structure suggests inherent filtration capabilities and
hard organic matters such as high surface area and wetting ability can potentially prove an
eco-conscious solution to water treatment challenges.

Surface water bodies, such as rivers and lakes, play a pivotal role in meeting diverse water
needs. However, these sources are prone to contamination from various pollutants,
necessitating effective water treatment methods. Which can be essential in presenting an
intriguing avenue for sustainable water filtration.

The objective of this research is to investigate the efficacy of coconut husk fiber in filtering
impurities from surface water. Through systematic experimentation and analysis, resulting with
the capture of suspended solids, organic matter, and potential contaminants present in surface
water sources. As it understands the potential of coconut husk fiber in surface water filtration to
align with the goal of developing an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution. Insights derived
from this study contribute to the ongoing discourse on sustainable water management, offering
a novel use of natural material for surface water treatment.

This study aims to assess the ability of accessing potable water for those who are far from being
able to get a hold of drinkable water.
