Inductive Transducers
• Inductive transducers : are those in which self-inductance of a coil or
mutual inductance of a pair of coils is altered in value due to a
variation in value of the quantity under measurement
• Detection of changes in inductance can be done only by using the
inductors in AC circuits
• If the coils are air cored (EMC) specially at high frequency .
-one solution is shielding
-or another is iron cored where interference effects are minimized
* Here output signals are functions of changes in inductance
Inductive Transducers
• Measurement of displacements by changing the tapping point of a
solenoidal or a toroidal coil as shown
Inductive Transducers
• Iron- cored coil with variable air gap can be used to measure
displacement

Disadvantage : the movable core (armature) is subjected to the electromagnetic force of attraction of
Which the displacement source has to overcome
Inductive transducers

Here the output signal is an induced emf of the secondary coil

Push –pull type self inductance transducer
• By moving core L1 and L2 change

• L1=L2=L when the core at central position

• Bridges are used (AC bridges) to have unbalance voltage proportional

to displacement
