Superseding AMS4345B
RATIONALE
AMS4345C revises Condition (3.2), Heat Treat (3.3), Properties (3.4), Reports (4.4) and Identification (5.1 .1 ), and results
from a Five-Year Review and update of this specification.
1 . SCOPE
1 .1 Form
This specification covers an aluminum alloy in the form of extruded bars, rods, wire, profiles, and tubing 2.000 inches
(50.80 mm) and under in nominal diameter or least thickness (wall thickness of tubing) with a maximum cross-sectional
area of 20 in 2 (1 29 cm 2), and a maximum circle size of 1 0 inches (254 mm) (see 8.8).
1 .2 Application
These extrusions have been used typically for structural applications requiring a combination of high tensile strength and
compressive properties and good exfoliation-corrosion resistance, but usage is not limited to such applications.
1 .2.1 Certain design and processing procedures may cause these extruded products to become susceptible to stress
corrosion cracking; ARP823 recommends practices to minimize such conditions.
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
The issue of the following documents in effect on the date of the purchase order forms a part of this specification to the
extent specified herein. The supplier may work to a subsequent revision of a document unless a specific document issue is
specified. When the referenced document has been cancelled and no superseding document has been specified, the last
published issue of that document shall apply.

3.4.3 Corrosion Resistance
3.4.3.1 Exfoliation-Corrosion Resistance
Specimens, cut from extrusions, shall not exhibit exfoliation corrosion greater than EB when tested at the T/1 0 plane in
accordance with ASTM G34.
3.4.3.2 Stress-Corrosion Cracking
When specified, specimens cut from extrusions 0.750 inch (1 9.05 mm) and over in diameter or thickness shall be tested in
accordance with ASTM G47 and shall show no evidence of stress-corrosion cracking when stressed in the short-transverse
direction (perpendicular to grain flow) to 25.0 ksi (1 72 MPa).
3.4.4 Fracture Toughness
When specified, plane strain fracture toughness shall be tested in accordance with ASTM E399 and ASTM B645 for
extrusions 0.750 to 2.000 inches (1 9.05 to 50.80 mm) inclusive in nominal thickness. A valid KIc meeting the requirements
of ASTM E399 or a KQ “useable for lot release” in accordance with ASTM B645 shall meet or exceed the values specified
in Table 4.

The producer of extrusions shall supply all samples for producer’s tests and shall be responsible for the performance of all
required tests. Purchaser reserves the right to sample and to perform any confirmatory testing deemed necessary to ensure
that the extrusions conform to specified requirements.
4.2 Classification of Tests
Composition (3.1 ), longitudinal tensile properties (3.4.1 ), exfoliation-corrosion resistance (3.4.3.1 ), tolerances (3.6), and
when specified, long-transverse tensile properties (3.4.1 ), compressive yield strength (3.4.2), stress-corrosion cracking
(3.4.3.2), fracture toughness (3.4.4), and ultrasonic inspection (3.5.1 ) are acceptance tests and, except for composition,
shall be performed on each inspection lot.
4.3 Sampling and Testing
Shall be in accordance with AMS2355.
4.4 Reports
The producer of extrusions shall furnish with each shipment a report stating that the extrusions conform to the chemical
composition, ultrasonic inspection when specified, and tolerances and showing the numerical results of tests on each
inspection lot to determine conformance to the other acceptance test requirements. This report shall include the purchase
order number, inspection lot number, AMS4345C, size or section identification number, and quantity. The report shall also
identify the producer, the product form, and the size of the mill product.
4.4.1 When material produced to this specification is beyond the sizes allowed in the scope of tables, or other exceptions
are taken to the technical requirements listed in Section 3 (see 5.1 .1 ), the report shall contain a statement “This
material is certified as AMS4345C(EXC) because of the following exceptions.” and the specific exceptions shall be
listed.
4.5 Resampling and Retesting
Shall be in accordance with AMS2355.
SAE INTERNATIONAL AMS4345™ C Page 7 of 8
8.3 Extrusions should be visually inspected for presence of intergranular corrosion attack. If any attack is detected, the
worst- case condition should be sectioned and examined for depth of attack.
8.4 Electrical Conductivity
Should be not lower than 36.0% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard) (20.9 MS/m), except that electrical
conductivity shall be determined and reported but shall not be cause for rejection of the extrusions.
8.5 Terms used in AMS are clarified in ARP1 91 7.
8.6 Dimensions and properties in inch/pound units and Fahrenheit temperatures are primary; dimensions and properties
in SI units and Celsius temperatures are shown as the approximate equivalents of the primary units and are presented
only for information.
8.7 Unless otherwise specified, the material producer shall work to the revision of this specification (AMS4345) in effect
on the date of order placement. Unless otherwise specified, material manufactured and certified to the immediately
previous revision of this specification (AMS4345) may be procured and used until inventory is depleted.
