How is energy produced in India?

• In India, power is generated from conventional (Thermal, Nuclear & Hydro) and renewable
sources (Wind, Solar, Biomass etc.). However, Major production of electricity is achieved
through coal a thermal power plant which is around 75% of the total power generation.

• Thermal power is the "largest" source of power in India. There are different types of thermal
power plants based on the fuel used to generate the steam such as coal, gas, and Diesel,
natural gas. About 71% of electricity consumed in India is generated by thermal power plants.

What is India’s commitment for energy efficiency and renewable

energy?
• India had committed to "achieve about 50% cumulative electric power installed capacity from
non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030, with the help of transfer of technology and
low-cost international finance.

• Renewable electricity is growing at a faster rate in India than any other major economy, with
new capacity additions on track to double by 2026. The country is also one of the world's
largest producers of modern bioenergy and has big ambitions to scale up its use across the
economy.

What is the source of electricity in Maharashtra?

 The different types of renewable energy in Maharashtra are as follows:

• Hydropower / Hydroelectricity

• Wind Energy

• Geothermal Power

• Solar Energy

• Biomass Fuel

• Tidal Energy

Why should we value electricity?

• Electricity is an important resource today. We need electricity for everything that we do, so
we must try to save it as much as possible. Electricity is derived from coal and other natural
resources extracted from the earth, so we can save the earth by saving electricity.

• Due to increasing population and increasing use of energy resources, there is a danger that
limited reserves of coal, petrol, etc. will get exhausted. Hence, we should save energy for
future generation.
